Through her paintings, Janet captures the character, colour and spirit of the world around her, while Chris transforms foraged Karoo fynbos and natural materials into intricate botanical sculptures inspired by the extraordinary forms and creatures found in nature.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | CHRIS VAN NIEKERK

Botanist-turned-artist Chris van Niekerk transforms the natural world into extraordinary works of art.

Based in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, Chris works with foraged and preserved natural materials — from leaves, seeds and grasses to flowers and Karoo fynbos — meticulously assembling them into remarkably lifelike insects and other forms inspired by nature.

At the heart of his work is a fascination with the unexpected similarities found in the natural world: the tip of a flower becoming the antenna of a butterfly, or individual grass seeds carefully placed to recreate the delicate texture of a bee.

Through his intricate botanical sculptures, Chris invites us to look more closely at the landscape around us and discover extraordinary beauty in the smallest and most easily overlooked details.

We are delighted to present the work of Chris van Niekerk as part of My Beloved Fellow Inhabitants, alongside artist Janet Dixon, at Te Heerlik.

Artist Spotlight | Janet Dixon

As we count down to the opening of My Beloved Fellow Inhabitants, we’re delighted to introduce one of the two featured artists, Janet Dixon.

Janet’s paintings celebrate the remarkable beauty of the natural world. Working in watercolour, she captures birds, wildlife and the subtle details of nature with exceptional sensitivity and precision. Living in the Klein Karoo, she draws endless inspiration from the landscapes and creatures that surround us.

Originally from the Eastern Cape, Janet pursued a career in medicine before dedicating herself to painting. Since 2005 she has exhibited widely and has become a respected member of the local art community through her involvement with ArtKaroo and the Artists of Oudtshoorn.

We invite you to experience Janet’s beautiful collection of original works alongside the extraordinary botanical sculptures of Chris van Niekerk.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to prepare for our next exhibition, and we’re excited to finally share it with you.

My Beloved Fellow Inhabitants opens on 24 July 2026 and celebrates the remarkable beauty, wonder and intricate artistry of the natural world.

This unique exhibition brings together the work of two exceptional Klein Karoo artists:
🖼️ Janet Dixon – whose paintings capture the richness and spirit of nature, and
🌿 Chris van Niekerk – whose extraordinary botanical sculptures transform natural materials into intricate works of art.
