While we rely on coffee for a morning boost, the Coffea plant evolved to use caffeine in its nectar as a strategic survival tool. It biochemically hacks a pollinator’s memory, creating a synthetic “buzz” that ensures bees return to the exact same botanical variety over and over—often ignoring richer nectar sources nearby.

It’s an evolutionary masterpiece: guaranteed cross-pollination for the plant, and hyper-motivated foragers for the hive. But as with any stimulant, it comes with a trade-off, tricking the colony into over-valuing the caffeinated blooms.
