Event though Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure is permanently closed, the JoburgPlaces team behind this iconic restaurant and venue are still at it. We still offer daily city tours, storytellings, events and activations. Plus we are hosting the Sise Kapa Pop-Up Restaurant Weekend at JSE Newtown from 2-4 December. That is it. Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure is now permanantly closed (what was first the Zwipi Underground at the Thunder Walker). Another era draws to a close.

Ready for our equipment and furniture sale tomorrow and for the last truck move next week. Thank you for the good times we had here. Proud that our kitchen served some of the tastiest food in Jozi.

In 2023 JoburgPlaces will expand and grow into LocalPlaces with two branches. One in Joburg and one in Cape Town. JoburgPlaces and iKapaPlaces. We are ready to flourish.

We are selling our remaining kitchen and restaurant equipment and furniture at Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure on Saturday 29 October from 9am-1pm.

We have kept everything we need for us to operate on a event booking basis at venues within the JoburgPlaces Portfolio of Spaces. Everything else must go as Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure is being closed!

A clear vision
Change is the only constant in business. Adapt, pivot, innovate, try, and try again. Learn along the way and become richer for the experience. This has certainly been the case for JoburgPlaces and, along the way, our future vision has evolved and become clearer.

At JoburgPlaces, we are first and foremost urban futurists. We interrogate the city’s past and contemporary culture, to understand its future. We provide insight into the makings and operations of the city. We dispense this knowledge through thought-provoking storytelling, whether it is in the form of a tour, lecture, storytelling, or writing. We disseminate this information in entertaining and accessible ways that appeal to everyone from travellers to businesspeople and residents. We host exceptional experiences and events as a result, that represent the culture and essence of the city.

Two major changes
With this vision in mind, we are implementing two major business changes:

1. We are soon opening a second operation in Cape Town. By 2023 we will evolve into LocalPlaces with branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, known as JoburgPlaces and iKapaPlaces. We are aiming to double our business turnover with little additional cost. Soon, we will be offering urban tours, storytellings and events in Cape Town too. We are especially looking forward to welcoming international customers to both cities while they are travelling to this country.

2. We have closed Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure as an events space and restaurant for now. It has become obvious that we do not need a fixed venue. We are known for our knowledge of the city and our ability to find the most astonishing, hidden spaces & places. We therefore do not want to be tied to any one location any longer. Instead, we want to offer tours, storytellings and events in a whole gamut of spaces instead. We are not going away; we are simply changing our modus operandi slightly. But everything we are known for will still be available.

Hosting you in Jozi
We are looking forward to hosting you in Joburg for now. Even though Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure is closed as a venue and restaurant, we will continue to show this remarkable space on some of our tours and continue to start some tours there. In addition, we are opening a second pop-up tour office at the JSE Newtown building for this season. Some of our tours will now start there. We cannot wait to share the Jozi city magic with you!
