Adele van Heerden’s solo exhibition, Hydraulics comes to a close.

The exhibition was developed during the Adele’s residency at NIROX. During her residency, Adele made work about hydraulic systems at Nirox, investigating how water moves above and below earth.

The exhibition comprised of paintings made with oil and gouache on linen, alongside a multi-channel sound installation derived from field recordings of water in different locations across the site, as well as photographic and video work. The title references hydraulics as a framework for understanding the physical behaviour, distribution, and connectivity of water within this landscape.

A new installation in the park, “Composition in Red, by Edoardo Villa”

Composition in Red was created in 1975, featuring on the cover of Esme Berman’s Art and Artists of South Africa (2010). In 1978, it was purchased by the South African Medical Association for its Pretoria head office, when it was repainted and renamed Composition in Light Blue.

In 2016 the Edoardo Villa Trust rescued the sculpture from imminent destruction, restored it to its original colour, and installed it on the University of Pretoria’s South Campus. The sculpture is on loan from the Edoardo Villa Trust as part of the Trust’s collaborative initiative with the Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture to perpetuate and enhance the artist’s legacy.

Inma Herrera and Seretse Moletsane first met at NIROX in 2025 during Soil & Water, where they participated as exhibiting artists. Their shared interest in material processes, landscape, memory, and embodied forms of knowledge led to an ongoing dialogue that has continued beyond the exhibition.

They undertook their residency together at NIROX (May - June), and they are used this period to deepen their individual research while supporting one another’s artistic development and laying the groundwork for future collaborations. Over the past month, they have travelled extensively through the Karoo and other regions of South Africa, conducting field research, collecting materials, visiting geological and archaeological sites, and engaging with local histories and landscapes. These shared experiences have become an important part of their respective investigations, creating a space where exchange, friendship, and artistic inquiry intersect.
