The Locrate Market

The Locrate Market Lo Crate = Local Creatives. It is important that we dispel the misconceptions around Soweto and show that Sowetans are capable of far more.

Locrate Market returns after a hiatus with deeper intention, joining a wider cultural movement unfolding across Johannesburg.

Please note: the event date has changed to 14 June 2026.

In honour of the 50th Commemoration of the legacy of June 16, 1976, Jozi My Jozi will host a four-day programme of community-led activations from 13 – 16 June 2026 in Soweto. This annual Youth Day Commemoration serves as both reflection and forward motion — a catalyst for strengthening Soweto’s cultural economy, while amplifying its heritage, creativity, and living culture.

Within this context, Generation Now becomes more than a gathering — it becomes a shared cultural thread connecting memory, movement, and what comes next.

A celebration of 50 years of youth culture.
A living archive of music, fashion, art, ideas, and entrepreneurship — from Mzukwane to now.Across the four days, Soweto will open up through a network of community-led experiences — film screenings, dialogues, exhibitions, guided tours, and cultural gatherings. Working alongside local tour operators, accommodation providers, artists, entrepreneurs, restaurants, and food vendors, the programme is designed to build accessible tourism pathways that turn participation into direct economic impact.

Curated cultural packages will connect visitors — local and international — to authentic township experiences, supported by safe and efficient transport between venues. In partnership with hotels, guesthouses, and lodges, special accommodation offerings will extend visitor stays, ensuring that Soweto is experienced not as a moment, but as a destination.

At its core, this is about more than programming. It is about circulation — of people, ideas, capital, and culture — in ways that benefit the community directly and sustainably. A model where creativity fuels enterprise, and enterprise strengthens community.
Update: This event is now free of charge.
Guests who have already purchased tickets will be able to claim a full refund directly through the original ticketing platform.

Two voices. One frequency.wav & join the Generation Now lineup.

They are not just making music — they are making a record of where we are right now. The sound, the feeling, the moment that future generations will point back to.

On 7 June, that moment has a stage.

Some sounds do not age.
They deepen.
joins the Generation Now lineup.
Decades in, and the dancefloor still leans in when he plays. That is not nostalgia — that is mastery. A body of work built in deep house, refined over years, that has become part of the architecture of what South African nights sound like.
On 7 June, he holds the room the way only he can.

When two of them step up together, the set becomes a conversation.

Mam’Thug & Saul Madiope. Back to back.
Two distinct voices finding a shared language in real time — reading the room, responding to each other, building something that neither could have built alone. That is the art form inside the art form.

On 7 June, they share the decks. And the floor shares the moment.
