I think this sums up Kings Grant Country Retreat. The road may sometimes be a little rough, (although we're thrilled to tell you that the road department recently graded our road and it is much, much better!) but so often in life, something extra special waits for you at the end of that unpaved road.

That's of course if authenticity, old architecture, history, being in nature, creative food and 'peace' matter to you!

If, however, you're looking for shiny bright lights, bling bling and ultra modern luxury, then perhaps you should take the other road.

Kings Grant Country Retreat was built by Trappist Monks in 1896 as a food supply farm. In the year 2000, the Catholic property was sold and restored into unique accommodation, a fully licensed restaurant, museum, function venues and extensive gardens.

This special place is where to come to when you need peace, rest, unstructured time and a slower pace. And somewhere completely different to anything you have experienced before.

Yesterday we took some time for ourselves and went hiking. It was a gentle reminder of how slowing down, disconnecting from the busyness of life, being in the beauty of nature and stepping away, even for a short break, can help us feel restored and refreshed.

I thought about what I was looking for in a place to feel this. Somewhere that wont break the bank balance, there must be nature, walks and the surrounds should be beautiful, it shouldn't be too far to travel to and it should feel peaceful, authentic and not commercialized. It should be an experience. While walking and talking, we realised that what we look for in a place, is exactly what Kings Grant Country is.

This is the beauty of stepping out. With relaxation and peace, comes clarity, perspective, rest and rejuvenation.

We thank Bavelile for 20 years of service! Today was Bav's last working day at Kings Grant.

We wish you all the best for this next chapter. Bav, aka Powerade, biscuit specialist, Tartare sauce queen, creamed spinach and a thousand other things - 20 years of kitchen experience is priceless! Thank you. Above all, we will simply miss you Bav! Go well.

Birthday celebrations were the order of the day at Kings Grant Country Retreat! Happy 80th birthday Colin!

Colin had a delicious light lunch on the deck with family and friends. The menu included a light buffet lunch with Chef Joy's famous succulent country roast chicken and colourful Summer salads including a whole platter of our homegrown asparagus with our very own housemade garlic and herb cultured butter, panko crumbed eggs, beef tallow roasted potatoes and veg, cheesy garlic and herb sourdough bread and a lively spring salad! And to finish, our Chocolate Ganache cake and a Carrot Cake. It was a relaxed, happy celebration of 80 years of Colin's life!

Retreat yourself here when you need slow and simple days, good food and a sense of peace and tranquility, born of Trappist Monks. Kings Grant was built in 1896 by Trappist Monks as a food supply farm. The original Monks and nuns sleeping quarters and farm buildings have been restored into accommodation, a fully licensed restaurant and Mill museum. Explore the wild aloe garden, historical farm buildings, take a mill tour or a walk on our newly created Fuschia Forest Trail.

It was a race against time! I'd gone to Serendipty Farm in Hilton, KZN to collect our first 40 Point of Lay Hy-Line Chickens in the Rav 4! That was all smooth sailing! The challenge was getting St Cluck Abbey from the workshop to the field before nightfall which was quite a distance away. With the help of all our staff, including the reception staff, passer byers and our customers, we eventually got it to the starting point!

It's been just over a week since our chickens arrived. Take a look at this album to see how it all went!

So far, it's been a great start with many lessons and I know well, still many lessons are to come...which is exactly the point. These beautiful, calm and happy Hy-Line hens supplied by Serendipty Farm are going to supply Kings Grant's restaurant with pasture-raised eggs. It's also another step towards Kings Grant becoming more self-sufficient, inspired by our Trappist Monk past - the all-time masters of self sufficiency and farm to fork food.

The long term plan is to diversify into the pasture-raised egg business so that we have another source of income during the quieter hospitality months and these first 40 hens will help teach us some of the basics before we take that bigger step. We'll be sharing our journey as we go.

We're all settling into the new reality and rythem of having chickens on the property. The horses have also finally accepted the chicken Tractor and are more relaxed! As for the chickens, they are really very sweet. Calm and inquisitive from the start. We've discovered they quite like soft Classical music too and seem to be very relaxed around human beings! Do come and see the St Cluck Abbey next time you visit us! Eggs incoming soon!
