THE HOUT BAY LEOPARD 🐆
Just beyond Beach Bar, on the rocks at the edge of the bay, sits one of Hout Bay’s most recognisable landmarks.
The bronze leopard was sculpted by Hout Bay resident Ivan Mitford-Barberton and placed on its rocky pedestal in March 1963. It was created as a memorial to the wildlife that once roamed the mountains and forests of the Cape Peninsula.
The last leopard recorded in Hout Bay was seen on Little Lion’s Head in 1937.
Our leopard is a nod to the original that has watched over this corner of the bay for more than sixty years, a piece of Hout Bay history that quite literally sits on our doorstep.
And naturally, ours is holding a glass of wine🍷✨
