WE HAVE IT. NOW LET’S USE IT: MAKING THE MOST OF OVERSTRAND’S UNESCO GASTRONOMY STATUS
Hermanus and neighbouring towns in the Overstrand were recognised in 2019 as Africa’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, creating an opportunity to further grow the region’s food, tourism and hospitality sectors.
To help local businesses make the most of this status, Restaurants SA, in collaboration with Cape Whale Coast Tourism and the Overstrand Municipality, will host a presentation by Darryl David, the initiator and director of the successful bid.
The session will look at what the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation means, why it is an important asset for the Overstrand, and how local businesses and communities can work together to benefit from it.
The designation is about more than restaurants. It recognises the wider food journey - from farmers, vineyards and fisheries to chefs, food producers, markets, restaurants and tourism businesses.
Good food is already part of what makes the Overstrand special.
The challenge now is to make more of it - creating experiences that give visitors a reason to stay longer and explore more of the region to create opportunities for small businesses and job creation.
Anyone involved in food, drink, hospitality, tourism or the journey from farm and ocean to table is encouraged to attend.
