The Bushveld is about so much more than mammals and predators. Aloe davyana, commonly known as the Transvaalaalwyn adds vibrant color to the dry surroundings. This spotted aloe rises well above the winter grasses, reaching heights of up to 1.5 metres with as many as six flowering branches.

A true Bushveld specialist, the aloe has evolved to thrive in harsh conditions, enduring frosty winter mornings and surviving seasonal veld fires. Its nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source for pollinators like bees and sunbirds, while its lightweight seeds are carried across the landscape by the wind.

Sometimes, the smallest wonders paint the biggest picture. Keep an eye out for these beautiful winter blooms on your next visit to Dinokeng Game reserve.

Mandela Day 2026 – Blind Birding Experience at Kwalata Game Lodge in the Dinokeng Game Reserve

What an inspiring and unforgettable . Kwalata Game Lodge was honoured to welcome members of the blind and visually impaired community from across Gauteng for a unique Blind Birding Experience, celebrating the values that Nelson Mandela lived by compassion, dignity, inclusion and hope.

The day was filled with laughter, learning and meaningful connections as participants experienced the beauty of nature through birdsong, touch, storytelling and the shared passion of birding. It was a powerful reminder that nature belongs to everyone, and that accessibility opens the door to unforgettable experiences.

A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, partners, guides and supporters who helped make this special day possible. Together we demonstrated that conservation and tourism can create lasting social impact when we work hand in hand.

As Tata once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” This event proved that with commitment and collaboration, barriers can be transformed into opportunities.

Together, we celebrated inclusio, inspired hope, and strengthened our community. ✨
