Harvest time is just awesome in the cape winelands. We’ve been brewing with grapes since the brewery first opened, and each year it’s exciting exploring how the fruit can show itself in a beer.
One of our feature beers from this year’s harvest is Grenache Saison, a collaboration brew with Afro Caribbean Brewing Company fermented with Grenache and raspberries.
Whole-bunch Grenache from our neighbours at Vrede en Lust Wine Estate in Simondium, was crushed and allowed to begin fermentation on the skins with natural yeasts. After two days, a saison wort of wheat, oats, and local hops was blended with the active grape ferment. Co-fermented with the natural yeast went on for a day, then was finished with saison yeast and local raspberries. A final conditioning fermentation happened in bottle for six weeks for bright effervescence.
The finished flavor is dry and structured, with red berry fruit, subtle tannin, and a fresh farmhouse finish.
This beer is a reflection of the grapes of our Simonsberg region, and of two fermentation traditions brought together in pursuit of expressing fruit, place, and season.
This beer is a great food beer; so pair it with a rich cheese, seared duck or shellfish, spring salad, or dark chocolate.
Grenache Saison is available now in bottle and on tap.
