MUNICIPAL OFFICIAL AND TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED CORRUPTION AND EXTORTION AS SAPS INTENSIFY OPERATIONS

The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga has arrested three suspects in separate operations in Sheepmoor and Kriel for alleged extortion and corruption.

In the first incident, on 17 August 2026 in Sheepmoor, two suspects allegedly disrupted construction work on the N2 Road and demand employment, threatening to halt operations if not employed. Police from Sheepmoor SAPS and Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (OCI) responded swiftly to the complaint. It was during this period when the suspects were found on site then arrested.

The suspects appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on 18 August 2026 on charges of extortion.

In a separate matter in Kriel, members of OCI arrested the Emalahleni Municipality Public Participation Coordinator following an undercover operation. The arrest came after allegations that the suspect demanded undisclosed amount of cash from the contractor in order to facilitate a peace agreement between community members and the contractor.

It is further alleged that the money was recovered from the suspect and seized as evidence.

The suspect also appeared at the Kriel Magistrate’s Court today, 19 August 2026, on a charge of corruption.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has lauded the teams that effected the arrests.

"These arrests will hopefully send a strong message to perpetrators of extortion and other related crimes that Police are determined to ensure that such perpetrators are brought to justice, and that there will be no tolerance to corruption in any public office or criminal elements who use extortion to disrupt service delivery.

I commend our SAPS members for their swift and professional response. We will continue with our operations and collaborate with municipalities, businesses and communities in fighting the scourge, " said the General.

MISSING PERSON FOUND DECEASED

Embalenhle SAPS would like to thank the community for their assistance and cooperation in helping police to locate Mr Nhlanhla Maseko, who was previously reported missing.

Unfortunately, police can now confirm that Mr Maseko was found deceased.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who shared the missing-person notice, provided information, searched for him, or assisted the police during the search.

The community is kindly requested to stop contacting the investigating officer regarding his whereabouts, as the missing-person search has now been concluded.

Further enquiries relating to the circumstances surrounding his death will be handled through the appropriate police investigation processes.

Our sincere condolences are extended to the family, relatives and friends of Mr Maseko during this difficult time.

POLICE OFFERS R100 000 REWARD FOR MOST WANTED MURDER SUSPECT

The Police in Mpumalanga are offering a reward of R100 000.00 to any person who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest and successful conviction of Mr. Phumulani Ezekiel Matsane.

Matsane is suspected to have been allegedly involved in a case where two people were shot and killed in Calcutta Policing Precinct. The two males were shot and killed at a tavern in Marite, on 15 May 2023. Meanwhile at this stage Police cannot rule out possibilities of his involvement in other similar cases which are under investigation.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mr. Phumulani Ezekiel Matsane (picture attached) is requested to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Madala Ndashe on 076 244 8577 or Lieutenant Colonel Freddy Magagula on 082 780 6815.

All information will be treated with confidentiality. The public is advised not to attempt to apprehend the suspect because as he is considered armed and very dangerous.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has reassured the public that Police are working hard to deal with crime in the area under Calcutta Policing Precinct, including areas like Mkhuhlu where several murder incidents were recently reported.
