DJ MAPHORISA: “WHEN YOU MAKE IT, LEAVE THE KASI”
DJ Maphorisa has shared a painful lesson about success and the people you grow up with.
He recalled buying a new car and proudly taking it home to the kasi. Instead of everyone celebrating his progress, he woke up the next morning to find that someone had thrown dirt all over his new car.
For Maphorisa, that moment changed something.
These were people from the same community where he grew up, yet he realised that not everybody who watches you struggle will be happy when they finally see you winning.
His advice is simple: once you start succeeding, sometimes you need to change your environment and create some distance. Not because you suddenly think you're better than everyone, but because success can attract jealousy, resentment and unnecessary problems.
It raises an interesting question:
When you finally make it, should you leave the kasi or should successful people stay and become an example for the next generation?
