The body of 23-year-old Simphiwe Zinhle Mchunu was discovered in a shallow grave in Umlazi, Durban, on 22 December 2025, a month after she was reported missing.

It is alleged that she was brutally murdered, dismembered and concealed inside a suitcase by her 22-year-old boyfriend following an argument.

The family hired a private investigator, which ultimately led police to arrest the suspect more than three weeks after her disappearance.

After spending one day in police custody, the boyfriend allegedly confessed to the murder and directed officers to the location of Simphiwe’s body. Her remains were found buried in a suitcase on his property in Umlazi.

Simphiwe was a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is remembered as hardworking and dedicated. She leaves behind a three-year-old daughter.
