CHICKEN DIARRHEA COLORS, WHAT THEY MEAN, AND TREATMENT

1. White Diarrhea
Meaning: Often linked to bacterial infection like Pullorum disease.

Treatment: Isolate sick birds, give antibiotics (as advised by a vet), and keep the pen clean.

2. Green Diarrhea
Meaning: Can be caused by Newcastle disease or sometimes poor feed quality.

Treatment: Vaccinate against Newcastle, improve feed quality, and give supportive vitamins.

3. Yellow Diarrhea
Meaning: May be due to coccidiosis or stress.

Treatment: Use anti-coccidial drugs, keep litter dry, and reduce overcrowding.

4. Brown/Red Diarrhea
Meaning: Usually a sign of coccidiosis (blood in droppings).

Treatment: Give anti-coccidial medication immediately, clean the environment, and provide fresh water.

5. Watery Diarrhea (Clear)
Meaning: Often caused by heat stress, too much water, or viral infections.

Treatment: Provide electrolytes, reduce heat, and ensure balanced feed.

Understanding chicken diarrhea: what the color tells you and how to treat it

yellow diarrhea
This often indicates coccidiosis or a bacterial infection such as clostridial enteritis. It may also appear when digestion is disturbed by stress or feed changes.
treatment:

1. for coccidiosis, add amprolium 20% powder at 1 gram per 2 liters of drinking water for 5 to 7 days
2. for bacterial infection, give oxytetracycline at 1 gram per liter of water for 5 days
3. follow up with a probiotic supplement to restore healthy gut flora

green diarrhea
This usually comes from excess bile pigments due to rapid gut transit or an infection. Stress and certain diseases can also play a role.
treatment:

1. provide a multivitamin and electrolyte solution to support recovery
2. if a bacterial infection is suspected, use enrofloxacin 10% oral solution at 1 ml per liter of water for 3 to 5 days
3. isolate affected birds to prevent spread

white diarrhea
White, chalky droppings point to a yeast or fungal overgrowth (candidiasis) or a general imbalance in gut flora, often after antibiotics or poor hygiene.
treatment:

1. give nystatin oral suspension at 100,000 IU per liter of water for 5 to 7 days
2. thoroughly clean and disinfect feeders and drinkers before refilling
3. avoid unnecessary antibiotics and include probiotics in the diet

red or bloody diarrhea
This is a sign of severe coccidiosis, intestinal bleeding, or heavy parasite load. mortality can be high if not treated quickly.
treatment:

1. administer amprolium 20% at 1 gram per 1.5 liters of water for 7 days
2. for mixed infections, use a sulfaquinoxaline combination product at the label’s recommended dosage
3. deworm with albendazole at 1 ml per liter of water for 2 days, repeat after 14 days
4. add vitamins A and K to the water to support healing and blood clotting

watery or foamy diarrhea
Very loose, foamy droppings can

7 CAUSES OF WATERY STOOL IN POULTRY

On a general note poultry does not pass out hard faeces like rabbits and other animals. But then at some point the critical semi-solid greyish faeces may change completely. Watery stool may become the case. When the birds poo leave it's normal to somewhat watery and this may be in some sort of colors to indicate other ailments. But when no visible brown, green or white color is shown then the watery stool could result from:

1) feeding excess protein to the birds: in my other teachings I showed you how protein could be a problem when in excess.
When protein is beyond the body allowance, deamination will cause the birds to consume more water than the body volume. Hence they will pass out watery stool continually.

2) Pellet/crumble feeds:
When the poultry feed come in these forms expect watery stool. The birds will take more water to balance the solids in their system.

3) Molasses:
When you administer molasses to birds above 4-5% of their requirement, osmotic pressure will be exerted leading to watery stool.

4) Weather balance:
If the temperature exceeds 41°C, heat stress will set in leading to dehydration. Dehydration in turn forces the birds to consume much water.

6) Salty feed: NaCl or table salt when excess in the feed causes metabolic unrest and increase in water intake. Thus, watery stool.

7) Disease:
Bacteria and or viral disease attack birds and give them a symptom of watery stool. But in this case, the color of the stool may play a role in indicating the nature of the disease.

*Good afternoon Poultry farmers*🐓🦃🦆

*How do we manage costs for our poultry enterprise?*

First and foremost farmers we need to treat free range as a business. Sooner than later you will realize that you are keeping those birds with income from somewhere . *It’s not sustainable*

Every farmer should know avarage performance of the birds ie potential egg lay rate, maturity weight , disease resistance capability and resilience to weather conditions.

There are many cost drivers in poultry farming. The following are some of them .

1) *Feed* - this contributes up to 80 % of the cost of keeping birds
• A farmer should know the feed requirement for the birds that you have .
• Know the nutritional needs . DONT just give junk . Birds will not perform , they will be susceptible to diseases and may die.
•I keep my birds in Goromonzi, I have realized that sometimes I just drive 50km to go drop 1 bag of feed . *This is a cost driver*
•Many are times you get into a fowl run and feed is all over the floor . Just up to 3/4 of the container.
• The best practice is 25 birds per feeder(6kg feeder)
•Maize constitutes about 70% component of any feed . 1 ton of maize plus other additives can feed 170 birds up to maturity .

1 ton maize = $300
170 mature birds =170*$5= $850 - *value add your harvest this season*
•Learn on farm feed formulation.
•Feed your poultry with appropriate amount of feed ;
*From Day 1 - Day 56 - Adlib feeding each chick will consume up to 2kg*
*From Day 56 - Day 126 - 60grams per bird then Increase your feed by 10 grams per bird per week up to a maximum of 120 grams per bird*
• *By the time you get to 120 grams per day make sure you offload all birds you don’t want for further production. The birds will eat into your margins*

2) *Disease Management*- this is one of the most cost consumer . If birds are not managed well , the farmer can spent so much money in treatment.
•One layer bird lost is 280 eggs lost in a year
•Prevention is better than cure . Practice strict Biosecurity, isolate sick birds and vaccinate then .
•*In Free Range we normally follow the following program*;
Day 1- Newcastle/IB
Day 10 - Gumboro/IBD 1
Day 15- Gumboro / IBD 2
Day 21 - Newcastle/IB
Day 28 - Fowl Pox
Day 42 - Coryza
*Repeat Newcastle every 6-8 weeks . And deworming at point of lay*

*The use of ethinoveterinary medicine can lower your production costs significantly. Imagine driving all the way to a Vet shop when you can use gavakava to treat your birds*
• We will share more on this subject

3) *Housing*- make sure your birds have a well ventilated housings.
The floors should be made of rough concrete then put bedding on top .
• When there is no ventilation and the housing is dirty , diseases are rampant.
• In Free Range we encourage 5 birds per square meter or even more space the better.

4).*Labour*- Is your project big each to have a dedicated stockman?
•How many tasks does your stockmen do ?
• *I have one stockman , who also work in the greenhouse and open-field garden , he is also the Garderner*
• Multi task your Labour to share costs .

5) *Record Keeping*- Most farmers do know the costs that were involved in keeping their flock due to lack of records .
• Document every transaction
• Document everything related to the project .
•*Your Free Range should be another stream of income*
• I discovered that due to lack of records , I was buying more feed for less birds , Mortalities and sales figures should reduce the amount of feed given to birds .
•*We will share record keeping templates on our page.*

•Farmers many of us are not making money with our projects . People know that you do chickens, it’s only popularity , you have debtors who are any are not paying BUT you are buying feed and medications cash upfront .

• Make sure you market your produce well in advance before they are due .

*This write up is to encourage farmers to think through their operations and can be criticized*

Together we can certainly have free range in retail and export market
