WE ARE MOVING!

After two years at One Park, following the sale of the building, it’s time to drop the curtain on this chapter. We’ve found something close by and will be back in action a couple of months. More on that later.

For now, come to our party?

On Saturday29.08.26, we’ve got a fun day planned, featuring:

9am-12 Yellow Jacket Coffee Roaster Pourovers
11am-4pm DJ sets from Chocolate Sinclair and Baha Suleiman
1-4pm Boerewors bagels on the braai

Onwards xx

I’ll probably average two bagels a week. When times are tough, maybe one or two more. Good thing about being in the bagel business is you can always eat. And if you love food, you’ll eat well. Today’s bagel was a really chubby egg, chive and bacon on plain. Thanks Nelly. Max Bagels turns 12 today. That’s a lot of sustenance. The shop has given me so much over the years, helping me build a life with my wife and daughter and giving Andrew and I the platform to try new things, some of which have worked. This is Matthew talking.. Andrew can do his own post. I am so grateful for this little shop. We didn’t know what we were doing, but we backed our feeling that if we made food we wanted to eat ourselves, and turned up on time, we would be OK. And so it has proved. As we get into our teenage years, there are one or two moves ahead and I’m excited about them, although I’ve always found it hard to get my head around growing without becoming vulgar, as we see so many things become in our industry. I like the idea of bonsai-ing the business, but sometimes that’s restrictive. Just ask Andy, who’s had to put up with me for so long. Let’s see. All I ever wanted was for it to reflect what we are about and to make enough for a living. Thank you all for helping us get there. I really mean it.

It’s ‘s turn in the hoppers - and they’ve roasted up a gem of a custom blend for us, mixing Brazilian, Ethiopian, Rwandan and Kenyan specialty beans for a combo that shows milk chocolate, red berries and honeyed citrus notes. Balanced, full bodied and clean. We love it! Limited 250g bags available in store at for the next few months. Shout out to the illustrator .machelm_ 🎯🎯🎯

‘The Caprese bagel is a simple thing, but therein lies the rub: each element has to be spot on. Fewer ingredients means each one matters that much more: Not enough tomato and it’s too dry; tomatoes seasoned too late and their natural MSG isn’t unlocked; anything other than Fior di Latte or buffalo mozz and it’s not a Caprese; fresh basil of course; Extra Virgin olive oil without question; A squeeze of lemon and a crack of black pepper a must. Poppy seed is my bagel of choice with the Caprese, for the pop of texture and just a hint of earthy sweetness.’ - MF

This nomination really hit for us, to be acknowledged by the guys at , who are the last word in understanding the specialty coffee scene in SA.

We are really proud to be part of this conversation. It’s a pleasure working with the likes of , and in bringing a range of specialty coffees to our people. If you’ll excuse the pun it’s a grind committing to this level of quality — and communicating the importance of it to consumers — but it’s one we welcome and do our best to rise to! The rewards are worth all of the effort.

Congrats to all the nominees, we are thrilled to be among you.

Thank you to all of our beloved regulars, who keep us floating, and if you haven’t visited yet please join us in our beautiful space at 💕

It’s a final peace out from today at as he leaves his role after four beautiful years to pursue bigger things in the shape of his very own business: . Give him a follow to track his progress! We are sad to lose such a special human being behind the bar, but excited to see and support him as he stretches his legs and becomes his own boss. He’s not going too far from home! Give him a high five if you’re in town today 🧡

Our Bree Street store recently turned 11 and like an 11-year-old, it just shrugged and said “whatever” and carried on, pretending not to want attention.

Still, there’s something about being old and established enough to start forgetting your own birthday that feels really satisfying.

The little brother at is coming up for his first birthday, however, and we plan to make a big song and dance about that.

Stay tuned. Happy birthday us.
