In the heart of Cape Town, one man’s quiet idea has quietly changed hundreds of lives on the streets. Michael Elion started the Secret Love Project years ago as a simple urban art effort, sticking hearts around the city to spark kindness and connection. What began as a design project during Cape Town’s World Design Capital year grew into a registered charity that hands out free packs of heart-shaped stickers to homeless and vulnerable people. These vendors sell them to motorists and passersby for R20 a pack, keeping every single cent no cuts, no middlemen.

The numbers show real impact: the project now supports over 500 vendors daily, generating around R3,6 million a year in direct earnings for people who need it most. That money buys food, shelter, clothes, and basic dignity for folks often ignored or pushed aside. Supporters praise it for restoring pride, cutting crime, and building community bridges without the usual red tape of big aid systems. Critics might wonder about long-term solutions or dependency, but the straight-up approach give tools, let people hustle has vendors reporting less jail time, more hope, and real steps off the streets. It’s a grassroots reminder that small acts of love, backed by donations and community buy-in, can deliver tangible results where traditional systems sometimes fall short.

A long time ago a very famous dog, named Max was flown in from Switzerland to stay at Avatara... He was on a commercial shoot and had his own chaperone and carers driven around in a Mercedes... Here's their message as well as a regular guest from Australia who was originally South African. And then a pioneering couple who had driven from Alaska to Ushuia and all of Africa ending at Avatara...how blessed I was to meet so many fascinating people 💗
