Emerging research continues to strengthen
The evidence for coffee's health benefits, including supporting heart and liver health, protecting against chronic disease, and promoting healthy aging. Many of these effects are linked to coffee's high antioxidant content, with some specific benefits also tied to its caffeine.
New and recent findings
Improves gut health: Recent research published in Nature Microbiology found that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, including the strain L. asaccharolyticus. This prebiotic effect is attributed to coffee's high levels of polyphenols.
Supports healthy aging in women: A 2025 study found a link between moderate intake of caffeinated coffee during midlife and a higher chance of healthy aging. This was defined as living longer without major chronic diseases, cognitive decline, physical disability, or poor mental health.
May help prevent COVID-19: Several 2024 studies suggest that compounds in coffee may help prevent infection with multiple variants of the COVID-19 virus, with benefits seen at one to two cups per day.
Morning vs. all-day drinking: Drinking coffee in the morning may offer greater cardiovascular benefits than consuming it throughout the day. A 2025 study found that morning-only coffee drinkers had a significantly lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and lower overall mortality. This may be because late-day coffee can disrupt sleep, affecting cardiovascular health.
