Smashburgers aren’t some trendy new idea — they’re actually one of the very first ways Americans ever made burgers.

Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s at busy fairs, factory lunch counters, and roadside stands, cooks didn’t form thick patties. They took a ball of fresh ground beef and smashed it flat right on a screaming-hot griddle.

Why? It was fast, practical, and created incredible flavor. That hard smash gives the patty maximum contact with the hot surface, producing those signature crispy, lacy golden edges while keeping the inside juicy and tender.

The technique stayed popular for decades because it simply worked. In the 1960s at a drive-in in Ashland, Kentucky, cooks even used a large can of beans as an improvised press to flatten the patties, helping perfect the thin, beautifully seared style we still love today.

At Morty's Smashburgers, we proudly keep this original method alive. Every single burger is hand-smashed fresh to order on our hot griddle — no pre-formed patties, just real beef, real heat, and real flavor.
