CASA LOCO HOI AN - Community Update & Emergency Lighting Tip

Dear friends and neighbors in Hoi An and Da Nang,

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the severe flooding. We hope you are all safe and sound. We understand that many areas are without electricity, and this situation could unfortunately last for days.

To help those in need of light, we wanted to share a simple guide on how to make a makeshift emergency candle using common household items.

---

**ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONS: DIY EMERGENCY CANDLE**
When you lose power or urgently need light, you can easily make a temporary candle from things you likely have in your kitchen:

**What you'll need:**
* 1 glass cup or ceramic bowl
* A small amount of rice
* Clean water
* Cooking oil
* 1 cotton swab (or a twisted piece of cotton fabric for a wick)

**How to make it:**
1. Pour rice into the bottom of the cup to create a base for the wick.
2. Add water until the cup is almost full.
3. Pour a thin layer of cooking oil (about 0.5 – 1 cm) on top of the water.
4. Dip the cotton swab into the oil to soak it, then stand it upright in the rice, ensuring the tip of the swab extends above the oil layer.
5. Light the tip of the cotton swab → and you have an "emergency candle" for illumination!

**VIETNAMESE INSTRUCTIONS: HƯỚNG DẪN CHẾ NẾN KHẨN CẤP**
Khi mất điện hoặc cần ánh sáng gấp, bà con có thể tự chế một cây nến tạm thời từ những thứ sẵn có trong bếp:

**Chuẩn bị:**
* 1 cái cốc thủy tinh hoặc chén sứ.
* Một ít gạo.
* Nước sạch.
* Dầu ăn.
* 1 que tăm bông (hoặc miếng vải cotton xoắn lại làm bấc).

**Cách làm:**
1. Đổ gạo vào đáy cốc để làm chân giữ bấc.
2. Chế nước lên trên cho đến gần đầy cốc.
3. Rót một lớp dầu ăn mỏng (khoảng 0,5 – 1 cm) nổi trên mặt nước.
4. Nhúng tăm bông vào dầu cho thấm đều, rồi cắm đứng vào phần gạo sao cho đầu bông nhô lên trên lớp dầu.
5. Bật lửa đốt đầu tăm bông → vậy là có một cây “nến khẩn cấp” để thắp sáng.
