Right at the top of Vietnam, in the shadow of the Lung Cu flag tower, sits one of the north's most charming villages. 🏘️

Lo Lo Chai is home to the Lo Lo, one of Vietnam's smallest ethnic groups. Rammed earth houses, terracotta roofs and stone walls give it a calm that feels a world away from the busier stops on the Loop.

It has quietly become a favourite for an overnight stay, with warm homestays in old village homes and a well loved cafe, one of the northernmost in the country. Sunrise coffee with the flag tower in view is hard to beat.

The most photographed rock in Ha Giang, and the one that needs the most care📸

The Ma Pi Leng Skywalk is a narrow ledge just off the pass, hanging out over the Nho Que River. From here the canyon opens up beneath you and the water glows jade green a long way down. It is the shot everyone comes for.

For the photo, shoot from behind and slightly to the side. That angle keeps the river bend, the cliffs and the scale all in one frame. Morning light is the cleanest, and a wide lens does more here than a zoom.

Now the part that matters. There is no railing. The rock is genuinely slippery when damp, and there is nothing below it. Stay well back from the edge, keep both feet planted, and never move backwards while looking at a screen. No photo is worth the alternative.

Most people rush the Ha Giang Loop in three days. Give it four, and the whole trip changes. 🏔️

That extra day is the difference between ticking off viewpoints and actually feeling the place. You slow the pace, add the peaceful Du Gia village, and leave room for trekking, boat rides, village visits and all the photo stops you would normally skip. Here is how it flows.

Day 1: Leave Ha Giang and climb into the mountains, starting at Quan Ba Heaven's Gate as the plateau opens up around you.

Day 2: Into the heart of the D**g Van Karst Plateau Geopark. Reach Lung Cu Flag Tower at the northern tip of Vietnam, then wander the hundred year old streets of D**g Van.

Day 3: The big one, taken slowly. The legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass and a boat trip on the emerald Nho Que River through Tu San Canyon, before winding down toward Du Gia.

Day 4: Slow morning in Du Gia, a swim and a gentle trek around the village, then a beautiful quiet road looping back to Ha Giang.

Four days means time to breathe, to talk with locals, to sit with a view instead of rushing off to the next. This is the Loop the way it should be done.

Heading to Lung Cu or Ban Gioc? Those border areas need a permit, and here is how to sort it. 🛂

Some of the finest stops on the Loop sit right on the frontier with China. Lung Cu, the northern tip of Vietnam, and Ban Gioc Waterfall in Cao Bang both lie in restricted border zones, and foreign visitors need a permit to enter.

Travelling with a tour: This is the easy path. The operator applies for your border permit into the restricted zones. After booking, you simply send your passport and we take care of the rest. The permit is 260,000 VND per person, and your guide handles the paperwork and every checkpoint along the way.

Planning it yourself: If you are riding the Ha Giang Loop or the Ha Giang to Cao Bang route on a rental or your own vehicle, you arrange the permit in person. Go to the Immigration Management Office in Ha Giang 2 ward, Tuyen Quang province, and bring your passport, your visa, and 260,000 VND in cash per person.

One tip for everyone. Carry your real passport on the trip, not just a photo. Checkpoints do ask to see it.

Discover Non Nuoc Cao Bang in 3 Days, the north’s best kept secret, from the seat of a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Day 1. Ease in through the craft villages. Phia Thap incense village and Dia Tren paper making village, then the peaceful Phat Tich Truc Lam Pagoda, before rolling on toward Ban Gioc.

Day 2. The big day. Ban Gioc Waterfall, the widest in Southeast Asia, then the vast Nguom Ngao Cave, the Ngoc Con viewpoint, the iconic Angel Eye Mountain, the Ba Quang golden grass hills and the ancient fossils of Tra Linh.

The kind that makes you put it down.

Cao Bang does not show off. It does not demand your attention or compete with anything. It just sits there, ancient and unhurried, with its limestone mountains and its still green rivers and its villages that have never once been in a rush, and it lets you come to it slowly until somewhere along the way you realise that the noise you carried up here from your normal life has completely stopped.

There is a specific kind of peace that only exists in places the world has not quite caught up with yet. Cao Bang still has it. All of it.

This one was not on the itinerary.

Your guide just quietly turned off the main road toward Ban Gioc and said follow me, I want to show you something. And that something turned out to be Ban Mon bridge, his favourite spot in all of Cao Bang, the place he comes back to not because tourists expect it but because it does something to him every single time he stands there that he has never quite been able to explain.

Now you are standing there too and you understand completely why he could not explain it. Some places just hold a feeling that language is slightly too small for.

We almost turned back. Then the fog lifted, and I forgot how to breathe. 🌫️

We reached the top of Ma Pi Leng and saw nothing. Just thick grey mist, cold and still, swallowing the whole canyon. Someone joked that we had ridden all this way for a view of the inside of a cloud.

So we waited. Coffee in cold hands, jackets zipped to the chin, staring into the white.

Then it moved. Slowly at first, the mist began to thin and drift, and a thread of jade green appeared far below. The Nho Que River. The fog pulled back like a curtain, and there it was, Tu San Canyon, the deepest gorge in Southeast Asia, walls dropping nearly 800 meters straight down to the water.

Nobody said a word. Some things are too big for words.

That is Ha Giang. It makes you wait, then it gives you a moment you keep for the rest of your life.
