The history of the iconic Lumberyard Steakhouse in Zenda, Kansas, is a story of transformation and community legacy that stretches over a century. Ultch Lumber Company was established in Zenda. The company had a long line of managers, including C.L. Elwell, and Wm. J. Adelhardt. Geo. Ultch, who owned 15 lumber yards across Kansas and one in Missouri, was the driving force behind this local operation. After his passing in 1974, his son, Geo. Ultch Jr., oversaw the business until it was acquired by the Farmers and Builders Lumber Co., Inc. in 1975. For the next few years, Leroy Bohrer and Bonnie Bailey ran the yard, with Bohrer as the yardman and route man, and Bailey as the bookkeeper and manager. However, in 1991, a new chapter began when the board of directors approached Woodrow and Beulah Graber with the opportunity to purchase the lumber yard. The Grabers seized the chance to create something special for the community—The Lumber Yard Steakhouse and Supper Club. Woodrow and Beulah’s vision, along with the help of their daughter Ruth and her husband Jerry Vanlandingham, transformed the old lumber yard into a beloved dining spot. The restaurant became famous for its mouthwatering barbecue ribs, served up by Ralph Lilja, drawing customers from all over. By October 1997, Ruth and Jerry’s daughter, Lisa Vanlandingham, took over the operation, continuing the family legacy. The restaurant maintained its reputation for great food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. In August 2010, the Molitor Angus Ranch, LLC, led by local rancher and farmer Mike Molitor, purchased the property, marking another new chapter. Then in August 2022, the latest owners, Cadillac Jack's LLC with Mike and Lori Eggleston as manager, took the reins, promising to continue the tradition of excellent service and delicious steaks. Today, The Lumber Yard Steakhouse remains a cherished part of Zenda, Kansas, offering a taste of history and a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy great food and hospitality.
