It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the passing of retired Yuma County Sheriff John R. Phipps. John was a longtime member of the law enforcement community and a dear friend to many of us throughout Yuma County.

John began his law enforcement career with the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office in 1962 as a dispatcher in Parker, Arizona. He later transferred to Wellton, Arizona, where he served as the Resident Deputy.

Sheriff Phipps worked every position within this agency and ultimately ran for Sheriff in 1980. He was sworn in as Sheriff in 1981 and retired in 1992, having served three terms as the Sheriff of Yuma County.

Sheriff Phipps leaves behind a legacy that will live on within this agency forever. He was one of the finest men and mentors I have ever known, and I was fortunate enough in my career to have been hired by him as a deputy. It was truly an honor for all of us to know and work alongside such an extraordinary leader. His loyalty, unwavering dedication, personal sacrifice, and uncompromising standards of conduct helped shape the growth and development of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Please keep his wife, Donna; his son, Jason; his daughter, Kimberly; and their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Sheriff Phipps is 10-97 on his final assignment in heaven and will be 10-7 forever. John, you will be missed by all. We will take it from here.
