𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

On July 8, 1776, the words of the Declaration were read aloud for the first time, carrying the promise of independence into communities across the colonies. 250 years later...50 States, 5 Territories, the District of Columbia, and Minor Outlying Islands of the United States, will be participating in a nationwide commemoration spearheaded by the Hawai'i America250 Commission. We will all be reading the Declaration of Independence at the same time across 9,500 miles.

In Virginia, this reading will be taking place at the Yorktown Victory Monument with a declaration that is open for guests to sign.

To commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and its first public reading on July 8, 1776, Yorktown & Co is hosting an event to participate in the ‘Sharing the Spirit of America’ a simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence across the World 250-years later, together at the same time.

From Sea to Shining Sea!
‘Sharing the Spirit of America’ will be across 15,000 miles and 19 time zones

Reading locations include all 50 States, each of the 5 US Territories, US Outlying Islands Washington DC, Antarctica, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Morocco, South Korea, Thailand, England, France, Austria, Italy, and Sweden.
European reading times start at midnight on the night of July 8.

Your dedication, teamwork, and passion for sharing history turned the waterfront and historic grounds into a living connection to the past.

To our visitors, thank you for joining us on this journey through time. Whether you stepped aboard a tall ship, explored our historic houses, joined a ranger program, or simply took in the views along the York River, you helped make this festival truly unforgettable.
