FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE CROWD — THE VIRGINIA BLACK EXPO WAS A VIBE!

Yesterday, Chef Darius O. and Wakeena Dickens had the incredible opportunity to represent Down Home Comfort Café at the Virginia Black Business Expo in Richmond and Chef Darius was right where he belongs: leading the crowd! 👨🏾‍🍳❤️

Together, we gave a live cooking demonstration featuring one of our Louisiana favorites: Jambalaya. Chef Darius walked the audience through the process, shared some of his culinary knowledge, and when it was finally time for everyone to taste it…

And with thousands of people registered, 150 vendors, entrepreneurs, food trucks, entertainment, community leaders, and powerhouse guests all gathered under one roof, the energy at Main Street Station was amazing!

Events like the Virginia Black Expo are about so much more than business. They’re about visibility, connection, culture, collaboration, and showing what happens when Black businesses are given a platform to shine.

We’re grateful to the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce for creating this space and for giving us another opportunity to share the food, story, and experience of Down Home Comfort Café with Virginia.

And judging by those empty sample tray and the copious notes the audience were taking...Richmond approved the Jambalaya! 🔥

Celebrate National Black Business Month at the 6th Annual Virginia Black Expo on Saturday, August 22 at Main Street Station in Richmond.

Spend the day discovering Black-owned businesses, shopping unique products, enjoying local food trucks, and experiencing powerful fireside chats and conversations with nationally recognized entrepreneurs, business leaders, entertainers, and changemakers, including David Banner, Pinky Cole, Lamman Rucker, Free Marie, Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur, DJ Akademiks, DJ Heat, and more.

Our owners were proud to represent Down Home Comfort Café and advocate for small, minority-, woman-, and veteran-owned businesses during the Virginia Governor’s Small Business Input Session.

Our message was simple: Opening the doors is only the beginning. Small businesses also need access to capital, workforce support, procurement opportunities, technical assistance, and resources that help us stabilize, grow, and remain strong in our communities.

We are grateful to the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce (VABCC) for inviting us to participate and ensuring that the voices and real-world experiences of Black and minority business owners are represented in these important conversations.

We are hopeful that the dialogue leads to meaningful policies, stronger resources, and greater opportunities for Virginia’s small businesses to not only survive, but thrive.
