The so called Bacon Tree has long been associated with the town of Winterport. Around 1779, an incident (know as The Cocoa Episode), took place involving the British Navy and the settlers of Winterport. A sloop, under a British flag of truce, dropped anchor off the shores of town. Surprisingly, the sloop officers demanded cocoa from the residents. While the cocoa, under gun, was being put on board

the shore men discovered a large cache of “arms” in the hold. Soon, an American Lieutenant Morse seized the ship, set fire to the ship, took the British as prisoners, and left the village. Fearing a reprisal from the British, settlers of the town hid their goods. Some even burned their household possessions. Judge Goodwin hid his silver and bacon among the thick foliage of an old pine tree standing in a field on his land. Because of the service rendered him by the tree, he requested that the tree be preserved and cared for after his death. Thus the tree heavily laden with Judge Goodwin’s valuable possessions, became known as The Bacon Tree--a symbol of patriotic courage and resistance to the British invaders.
