We spent the last night of our road trip on the banks of then Mississippi River in Memphis. As the sun set, we reflected on the incredible experiences we enjoyed in our 4500 mile road trip out West. From the hills of Tennessee two weeks prior, we journeyed through Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska before driving along the high plains to Wyoming. From there we descended through the mountains to the Jackson Valley where we spent a week at a dude ranch across from Grand Teton.
•
It’s safe to say that was one of the best weeks of adventure in my life.
•
We rode horses at dawn, hiked in Grand Teton, carried bear spray and experienced white water rafting in the Snake River. We suppered by campfires in sagebrush pastures where buffaloes roamed. We made new friends, learned to cook over open fire and trained our lungs to keep up with our feet as we made over 15,000 steps a day in 7100 feet elevation. And every night we watched the sun set over those gorgeous mountains in a glorious display of light and color. Then the stars came out and silence descended on the ranch.
•
We didn’t see a grizzly, to my husband’s regret, but we did sight moose, elk, buffalo, bighorn sheep, bald eagles and a field mouse who took up residence in our cabin. There may have been a bear on the porch one night as I awakened to the loud clattering of rocking chairs against the cabin wall. I did not move out of bed to check the window. 😳
•
After the ranch, we traveled through Utah and Colorado, then visited Amish communities in Kansas and Oklahoma where we sampled cinnamon rolls at local bakeries. (Yes, they were delicious!)
•
We ended our journey at our daughter and son-in-law’s house again outside of Nashville where we enjoyed our grandsons for a few days before heading back to Winston-Salem.
•
It feels good to be home, but we left part of our hearts in Wyoming. I have been telling people if we would be 30 years younger we would move there! But for now, we will be content with visiting as often as possible.
