I take things too personally.

There. I said it.

Someone gives me criticism, a bad review, a comment, or even just a look I don’t understand… and sometimes I let that s**t get way too deep under my skin.

I know not everything is about me. I know people have their own experiences, expectations, bad days and perspectives.

But when you pour your heart into something, it can be really damn hard not to take things personally.

Double D’s isn’t just a restaurant to me. It’s a piece of me. So when someone doesn’t like something we do, sometimes my first reaction isn’t curiosity… it’s hurt.

That’s something I’m working on.

Because feedback can be useful without becoming a personal attack.

A mistake can be something to learn from without becoming a statement about who I am.

And somebody not liking what I built doesn’t mean what I built doesn’t matter.

I’m still learning how to separate the business from the person.

And honestly… I’m still figuring that s**t out.

But that’s part of telling the story.

The good. The bad. The things I suck at.

All of it.

Chicago bound. ❤️

Heading out for Parents’ Weekend to spend some time with my son Dylan — and I figured this trip was the perfect time to start telling a little more of the story behind me… and behind Double D’s.

My dad was a restaurateur. He passed away when I was 15, but a lot of what I learned from him has stayed with me.

And that name — Double D’s — isn’t just a catchy restaurant name. It’s actually a bunch of initials tied to the people in my family.

I’m going to share more about my dad, my family, where the name came from, and eventually how all of that led to Double D’s.

So maybe this week in Chicago is the beginning of telling that story.

Simplicity > complex.
I want to take things and make them simple. Lets the flavors of the meat shine. We could have added all kinds of rubs / sauces / whatever we wanted. Nope kept it as simple as we could.
Cole slaw is an example. We make it in house. It’s cabbage apples broccoli slaw mixed with an in house dressing with apple c***r vinegar / apple c***r / mayo and few other things. Slaw is kick ass.

THINGS I SUCK AT: PATIENCE.

I’m not a patient person.
I have a short fuse.
And when things don’t go the way I think they should, I can get frustrated as hell.

Owning a business has a funny way of exposing every one of those flaws.

There have been setbacks. Delays. Mistakes. Bad days. Decisions I wish I could take back.

But I’m learning something:

A setback is a roadblock. It’s not the end of the road.

Sometimes you have to slow down. Take a breath. Figure out what went wrong. Then find another way around it.

I’m still working on the patience part. 😂

But I’m also learning that building something from the ground up isn’t about getting everything right.

It’s about getting knocked back and keeping your ass moving forward.

That’s the story I’m telling.

The good.
The bad.
The things I suck at.

Because there’s a lot more to this Double D’s story than what you see on the floor.

Brisket. Bourbon. Bad decisions. And a whole lot of figuring it out along the way.
