For generations of Wildwood visitors, a slice of Mack’s has been part of the vacation...the kind of taste that brings back boardwalk lights, salty air, and summers with your family.

Mack’s opened on the Wildwood Boardwalk in 1953, but its story began in Trenton.

Anthony “Tony Mack” Mackrone and his wife, Lena, brought their family’s tomato pie tradition from Nottingham Way to the Jersey Shore, building a business that would involve their children and grandchildren.

The first Wildwood shop opened at Wildwood Avenue on Memorial Day weekend.

According to local historian Ralph Grassi’s account, rain soaked the opening weekend and the family sold just eight pies. That slow start gave little hint of what was coming: Mack’s eventually expanded to four locations along the Wildwood Boardwalk.

It remained a family tradition behind the counter, too.

The next generation grew up learning to spin dough, serving birch b**r, and working alongside relatives. Those summer jobs helped put several of the grandchildren through college.

With its thin crust, distinctive cheese blend, and tangy sauce, Mack’s developed a flavor that fans could recognize, and a place in their summer routines.

For some families, the first slice meant the vacation had officially started. The last meant it was almost time to go home
