So for date night we visited a pizza place we had never been to before… well, sort of. Kristen used to eat at this place in Lawrence when she was going to KU. It’s called Pizza Shuttle and they’re located on the WSU campus.
She was excited because it reminded her of good times gone by, I was excited because it was pizza! But I must admit, I was expecting just another pizza. To my surprise it might be my new favorite pizza. It was just that good. I think the crust steals the show, but wow, that pizza is good!
I got the chicken, bacon ranch, Kristen got supreme minus the green pepper and we got a pepperoni and breadsticks. All were delicious. I think the chicken, bacon ranch was the fan favorite.
Give this place a try. You won’t be sorry, and until next time… keep your forks full.

For date night this week, we went to a little place I’ve had my eye on for a while. It’s a bit pricier than our typical stop, but my birthday was this week so we decided to go someplace a little fancier. Where did we end up? A restaurant called Georges French Bistro.
George’s was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2025. This is pretty special because this marks the first time any restaurant in Wichita has ever been nominated for this award. Quite impressive indeed! So where’s George’s located? Some swanky or trendy part of town you might think, but no, it’s found at Central and Oliver. And while the location might seem humble, that’s the only humble thing about this place.
As I walked in the door I was immediately impressed with how nice it was. What I really noticed was the patrons. It was busy and everybody was beautiful. Beautiful people wearing beautiful cloths. I don’t think anyone in there shopped at Kohl’s. It looked like prom night except everyone was middle aged. And then there was me and Kristen. Oh, we weren’t the only casual dressers, but we were definitely in the minority. But enough about that… let’s get to the food.
We ordered Poutine for our appetizer, I got the Duck A L’orange and Kristen just got French Onion soup because she knew the appetizer would fill her up. The duck… delicious. The soup… wonderful. But let’s get back to that Poutine. I had never had it, didn’t even know what it was, but it might be the best thing I’ve ever eaten. Think bar food and French cuisine collide like chocolate and peanut butter and something amazing is created. It’s French fries topped with shaved ribeye, cheese curds, beef gravy and covered in provolone cheese. OMG! I’ll go back just for this! What an amazing creation. This was a great stop on our food journey.
Next week is Kristen’s birthday. I’m thinking maybe Taco Tico! Stay tuned to see how that plays out, and until then, keep your forks full.

Date night this week took us to a little restaurant in Greenwich Place Shopping Center. Greenwich Place is located at 2716 N Greenwich. It’s where Mardel, Cavender’s and Bonefish, along with a host of other stores and restaurants are located. The restaurant we landed at?? Albero Bistro.
Albero is an Italian restaurant. Our server’s name was Washa. That’s how it was pronounced but not spelled. She was a joy! She had this beautiful, thick accent and did a wonderful job of giving us a tour through the menu. She told us we had to try the Italian nachos, so we did.
I’ve had Italian nachos before; it’s not really a new thing, but this was a unique take and we really enjoyed them. The chips were made from pasta and didn’t get soggy like tortilla chips do, there was this pickled relish on top that I really liked and a sauce that was wonderful. We added chicken. Really, really good!
Next we had the Cajun Pasta… blackened chicken, roasted red peppers, penne pasta in a Cajun cheese sauce. It was a little spicy and absolutely delightful! I think it’s my new favorite dish… for now. We will return. It’s one of the best stops we’ve had on our food adventure for a while. I highly recommend it.
After that we went to Dairy Queen and got a dipped cone. I highly recommend that as well.
Until next time my friends, keep your forks full.

So for date night this week we visited a chicken place. I know what you’re thinking… Oh great! All we need… another chicken place! Frankly, me too. Remember when Kentucky Fried Chicken was the only game in town? Now you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a chicken shack! But this place is different… I mean, how many chicken shacks will you find on the NE corner of 13th and Mosley that are open 24 hours a day?!?! Only one and it’s called Chicken Chicken.
Let me start with my first thoughts when I walked in… this place looks like they decided to open a restaurant this morning. Warehouse and restaurant all in one and the bare necessities required to run it. And there’s no seating, but that’s ok, it takes more than that to scare me off. I’m a married man.
As for the food, it was very good. I just knew it had to be. I got chicken strips and Kristen got catfish. Loved them both. You know what I was most impressed with? The food was seasoned and seasoned well. I swear, people are afraid of spices it seems. We had original and spicy. Spicy is the best. It’s not that hot and the flavor is just better.
They have a second location too. I don’t know much about it. Perhaps they sell burgers there as well, but I wanted to experience this place. It looked a little more adventuresome. Go check ‘em out. It’s worth the stop.
Until next time, keep your forks full.

I was in Hutchinson the other day around lunch time so I looked for a home grown burger joint. I found a little place called R&B Drive In and learned it was the oldest drive in, in Kansas, open since 1948. Today it’s owned by only the third owner. Take a look at the bar stools in the picture. Those aren’t newer replicas, those are the original stools from 1948!! This is a great place and the burgers and hand cut fries did not disappoint. Take a little trip and check ‘em out. It’s worth the drive.

Well for date night this week we went to O'Brien's Irish Pub located at 5205 E Kellogg. I’ve driven past this place a million times. I’ve always known it was there, but for whatever reason have never stopped.
They had a lot of patrons but seating and service was still great. Our servers name was Nikki and she was wonderful. She was knowledgeable of what they offered and made some great suggestions.
We had a tough time deciding on an appetizer. Nothing quite suited our fancy. They offered chili cheese fries but that seemed a little heavy. I asked Nikki if the kitchen could create a loaded fry for us, sans chili, and by golly they did! Let me just say this was gas. (This is the newest term for really good. Try to keep up people!)
For our main course we wanted pizza. Our go to pizza is pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and onion so we got that, but they had a couple specialty pizzas that caught our eye… the Big Nasty Irish and the Reuben Pizza. I kinda wanted the Big Nasty Irish just so I could say Big Nasty Irish, but Kristen is a Reuben fan so we went with the Reuben Pizza. I’d give the Reuben Pizza a 6 or 7… six se-ven. Actually, it was better than that. I just wanted to say six se-ven. I said this to Kristen and a lady sitting next to us heard me. She glared at me from the corner of her eye and told me she was a school principle. She playfully doubled her fist and said, “I could just punch you for saying that.” We had a good laugh over it. Irritating people is one of my spiritual gifts.
Hey, this is a great place! They had a dozen tv’s I suppose and the place just had a great vibe. If you’re looking for a place to meet up with friends, have a few drinks, catch a game and have some good grub, check out O’Brien’s Irish Pub.
Until next time my friends, keep your forks full!

Those of you who know me know I don’t love Mediterranean food, but one of our wonderful neighbors gave us a gift card for watching their cat while on vacation, so we, along with four of our neighbors, went to N&J West Mediteranian Bar and Grill located at 8448 W Central.
We often run into people we know when he hit the town, and for whatever reason, it’s most often these people! Look at the pic and give them a shout out if you know them.
It’s a very nice place and the wait staff was wonderful. It was quite busy but they still managed to seat us with little wait. Our server was very helpful. She said her favorite thing on the menu was an appetizer called shawarma fries so we had to get those. And in fact, this was the hit of the night. It’s a big appetizer… enough for all of us to have some, and everyone at the table really enjoyed them.
Of course we had hummus, which I don’t love anyway, but Kristen does. However, she didn’t really care this one.
We also got the mushroom soup because Defazio’s (remember them?) had a mushroom soup that I loved. This one was a little mushroom heavy, even for me, and it was luke warm at best which nobody likes.
Kristen and I got the Mixed Grill and split it. It was easily big enough for two. Chicken and beef kabobs with Kafka, vegetables and rice. The flavors were good. The beef was cooked perfectly to a medium rare and the chicken was juicy. However, the beef had a lot of connective tissue in it, which is common for cuts that are less than prime. And this, like the soup, just wasn’t very warm.
One of our friends had the fattoush salad which he said was wonderful. Another had cabbage rolls which i think she really enjoyed as well.
Regardless, we had a great time with our friends. So until next time, keep your forks full!

So for our Friday date night we went to Saigon Restaurantestaurant at 1103 N Broadway. This place has been in business for 34 years and neither of us had ever been here! Crazy, right?? Just a short walk down the street is a restaurant called Little Saigon. Now I’ve been there several times, but never Saigon. Why? Well, it seems I typically go with a group, like after church or something. For whatever reason we just always end up at Little Saigon.
I’m not sure how we ended up with a Saigon restaurant and a Little Saigon restaurant so close to each other. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
I get the feeling there are two teams here… team Saigon and team Little Saigon. Now that I’ve eaten at both, I would have a hard time choosing a team. We had a wonderful experience at Saigon last Friday.
We got there about 7:30 and the place was very busy. We were still seated and greeted promptly. Our server, who was part of the family that owns it, was amazing. She spent a lot of time with us explaining all the different fare, of which there is much!! The menu is like seven pages long! I didn’t take photos of the whole menu. Personally, I put that in the minus column… it’s just overwhelming.
Our server claimed their egg rolls were the best in the city. That’s a bold claim! We had to order those. We got the crab Rangoon as well. They were both excellent! The best in the city??? Maybe. They were most excellent.
Our server told us they had recently re-invented their pho recipe so Kristen got that. It was very good. I got the char broiled pork with onions because that’s what our server said I should get. I was not disappointed.
I highly recommend this place. Sweet, sweet people and wonderful Vietnamese and Chinese food. When we left the owner even came outside and watched us as we walked to our car. North Broadway can get sketch on Friday night. Give Saigon a try, regardless of what team you’re on. This was a great stop on our food journey.
Until next time, keep your forks full!
