In 1964, radio astronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson began using a 20-foot horn-reflector antenna at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, to detect faint radio waves bounced off early communication satellites and analyze the Milky Way. Almost immediately, an unrelenting, low-frequency hiss contaminated their readings across all directions of the sky, day and night.
Determined to eliminate the interference, the pair systematically overhauled the instrument. They taped over riveted seams, checked electrical circuits, and evicted a pair of pigeons nesting inside the antenna throat, even scrubbing out what Penzias famously termed a layer of "white dielectric material." Yet despite every mechanical and physical cleaning effort, the persistent 3.5 Kelvin background hiss remained completely unchanged.
A breakthrough arrived when Penzias contacted physicist Robert Dicke at nearby Princeton University, whose team was actively designing an experiment to search for thermal relics of an expanding early universe. Dicke immediately recognized the signal: Penzias and Wilson had accidentally detected the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation, capturing the dying thermal afterglow of the Big Bang and ultimately winning the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics.
