🦆 Duck update!

Everyone is doing great around the pond... and yes, we’re still feeding them.

At this point, I guess that’s just part of the routine because my daughter has a soft spot for just about every animal on the farm. 😂

One big change, though...

Mama mallard has moved on, but her little one decided to stay. Somewhere along the way, that baby stopped acting like a visitor and started acting like one of the flock.

It’s been pretty amazing to watch a wild duck find a place among our domestic ones.

For now, everyone is healthy, happy, and exactly where they’re supposed to be.

I’d say that’s a pretty good update.

I think we’ve discovered another use for Premier1 electric netting... 😂

Sure, it’ll keep livestock where they’re supposed to be...

But apparently it’ll also keep my wife contained.

Those little hobbit legs weren’t quite tall enough to step over the fence, so I had to shut the power off and let her out. 🤣

I’d like to say she appreciated my assistance...
..but judging by the smile she gave me, I think she’s already planning how she’s going to get even.

Marriage on the homestead is never boring. ❤️

This morning I was just trying to feed the pigs...

I had no idea something else was waiting to greet me.

When I lifted up the pig shelter, there it was—a beautiful black widow sitting right where my hand could have ended up.

She wasn’t bothering anyone, and I wasn’t interested in bothering her either. We both agreed to keep our distance. 😅

It was a good reminder that on a homestead, you never really know what’s hiding underneath a board, bucket, shelter, or piece of equipment.

That’s why proper PPE isn’t just about comfort—it’s about protecting yourself from the surprises you can’t see.

Stay aware, take your time, and keep those boots and gloves on.

With *Little House on the Prairie* making its way back to TV, I’ve found myself thinking about what homesteading really means today.

For many people, it’s easy to picture covered wagons, log cabins, and pioneers carving out a life on the frontier.

But that’s not the world most of us live in anymore.

So what defines a modern-day homestead?

Is it acreage?
Growing your own food?
Raising animals?
Learning practical skills?
Becoming more self-sufficient?
Or is it simply a mindset of stewardship and providing for your family with what you have?

I’d love to hear your thoughts because I don’t think there’s only one right answer.

🍕🐷 We weren’t sure what our KuneKunes would think about pizza...

Turns out, we had nothing to worry about.

The funny part wasn’t that they liked it—it was *how* they liked it.

Each pig grabbed an entire slice and immediately took off to find a private place to eat it. Apparently, sharing isn’t part of the KuneKune handbook. 😂

Just when you think you’ve figured these pigs out, they do something that makes you laugh all over again.

And before anyone asks...

Yes, they still got their vegetables. Courtney made sure of that. 🥒

Watching Ginger absolutely demolish a cucumber at the end might have been my favorite part.

I don’t complain very often...

…but if anyone has ever told you East Texas cools off in the evenings, they weren’t telling you the whole truth. 😂

It’s still hot.
It’s still humid.
And by the time evening chores are finished, you’re soaked.

Meanwhile...

I’ll let you take one guess who was out doing the chores... and who was enjoying the air-conditioned breeze from the side-by-side. 🤣

The evidence is pretty hard to argue with.

(For the record... she says she was supervising.)

Anyone else dealing with summer humidity that feels like you’re wearing a wet blanket?

I don’t really consider myself a redneck...
..but I do have a few tendencies. 😂

We don’t own a stock trailer yet, so when it came time to bring home our new bull calf, we made do with what we had—a utility trailer and a small livestock cage.

Around here, you learn pretty quickly that waiting until you have the “perfect” setup usually means you’ll never get started. Sometimes you’ve just got to be resourceful and use the tools you’ve already got.

The important part is that our newest addition made it home safely.

We’re excited to watch this little guy grow and become part of the future of our homestead.

I may have gotten myself into a little trouble today... 😂

With Ashlynn away, I figured it was the perfect time to line up a little surprise for when she gets home.

Was it something bad?

Not really.

Did I do something I probably should’ve mentioned first?
..Maybe. 🤣

Let’s just say there was one very adorable passenger riding home in the trailer today, and I have a feeling our newest addition is going to be getting a whole lot of attention.

I can’t wait to see her reaction!

My wife has informed me that she loves me...
..but listening to me chew is apparently an act of endurance. 😂

According to her, my smacking and chewing noises are enough to make her consider questionable life choices.

But somehow...

When **these two** are smacking away at their dinner, it’s “the cutest thing ever.”

Make it make sense! 🤣

I guess KuneKune pigs get a pass that husbands don’t.

Anyone else’s spouse have completely different standards for animals than they do for you? 😂🐷
