Cedar Porch Homestead

Cedar Porch Homestead Family owned and operated, regenerative farm specializing in soil building and pastured proteins for your dinner table. See us in action on YouTube!

Formerly Metcalfe Family Farm, we loved our time on the farm, but in May 2018, the Big Guy led us to sell and move into town. We landed on a half-acre lot with space for our home, a shop, and our business, Metcalfe Design Co., LLC. At the time, we thought we’d left farming behind… but God had other plans. Prompted to reconnect with our roots and take control of where our food comes from, we starte

d a backyard homestead. Now, we’re raising pastured eggs, chickens, quail, rabbits, and pigs, growing a garden, and even building a 50-acre regenerative agriculture property from scratch—expanding our mission to steward land, grow healthy food, and live intentionally. Follow along for faith-led homesteading, successes, lessons learned, and a little fun along the way—because farming isn’t just a job, it’s a lifestyle!

My daughter calls the ducks...

And they immediately fall into formation. 🦆🦆🦆🦆

At this point I’m not sure if she’s raising ducks or commanding an army 😂

Either way, they seem to know exactly who’s in charge.

I’ve always believed in working smarter, not harder. 😎

First, I sat back and watched the kids work.

Then I sat back and watched my dad work.

I thought I had this whole thing figured out... 😂

Then I looked over and realized my wife was sitting there watching *me* work.

Apparently she’s operating on a level I haven’t unlocked yet. 😅

This old pond has been sitting quiet for a long time... 🦆🌿

Today we’re changing that.

We introduced Muscovy ducks and Khaki Campbells to bring life, movement, and biology back to the water.

The Muscovies will help provide a sustainable food source, the Khaki Campbells will keep us supplied with eggs, and both breeds are incredible foragers that thrive doing what ducks were designed to do.

One of the things I love most about regenerative farming is watching a piece of land come alive again.

This might be controversial, but here goes...

We’ve become disconnected from where our food comes from.

My belief is that investing in quality food, knowing your farmer, and understanding how your food is produced is one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your family. 🌱🐓

The goal isn’t just to live longer—it’s to live better.

I’d rather spend my money supporting local farms and building health than spend years chasing problems I might have been able to avoid.

And if we’re wise with our choices, maybe we can pass more on to our children and grandchildren instead of handing it all back to the system.

Everyone talks about the American Dream. 🇺🇸

For me, it isn’t a bigger house or a nicer vehicle.

It’s watching my 17-year-old daughter head out in the evening to care for animals, steward the land, and build something of her own through hard work and responsibility. 🌱🐓

That’s the dream I was chasing all along.

Not saying everything around us is designed with our best interess in mind… 😅

…but I do have eyes.

That’s a big reason we chose this life:
raising animals, growing food, working together as a family, and getting a little closer to the way people were meant to live. 🌱🐓🐖

Feeling a little down? 😅🐖

Have you tried sitting with KuneKune piglets?

9 out of 10 homesteaders recommend it…
and the 10th one probably just hasn’t tried it yet 😂

Back porch views hit different when you first start homesteading… 🌾

I thought it would be peaceful mornings and sunset strolls 😅

Turns out it’s more like sweat, dirt, and wondering what I got myself into 😂

Still wouldn’t trade it though.

Me: “Please don’t bring anything else home.” 😅

My daughter 20 minutes later: 🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖

At this point I’m starting to think “no” is just a suggestion around here 😂

“What’s the most expensive thing you own?” 😅

Easy.

I haven’t stopped spending money on this kid since the day she was born 😂❤️

And honestly… watching her grow up around animals, hard work, and this homestead has been worth every penny.
