There are moments in business that no sales report, ranking, or award can ever measure. This is the moment where it’s measured.

We received a lovely card from someone who wished to remain anonymous.

“You are a pillar of the business here with hundreds of local customers who consider you family.”

They reminded us that while trends come and go, relationships endure. They shared that they’ve been coming to us for years, that they proudly choose Manhattan Bagel, and when it comes to bringing bagels to their son in Colorado, it’s our bagels they pack in their carry-on.

That sentence stopped us in our tracks.

For 24 years, we’ve opened our doors before sunrise. We’ve celebrated birthdays, catered graduations, fueled little league games, comforted families after funerals, and handed countless cups of coffee across the counter to people we’ve watched grow up. Many of our first customers now bring in their own children.

We often say we’re a neighborhood bagel shop, but today someone reminded us that those aren’t just words. They’re something people genuinely feel.

Running a small business isn’t always easy. There are long days, challenges, uncertainty, and plenty of moments where you wonder if people notice the effort behind the scenes.

Then a handwritten card appears.

No signature.

No expectation of recognition.

Just kindness.

To the person who left this with us : thank you. You reminded our entire team why we do what we do. Your words meant more than you probably realize, and they’ll stay with us for a very long time.

To everyone who has supported Manhattan Bagel over the past 24 years—whether you’ve visited once a week, once a month, or every single morning—thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives.

Every single day they work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our town clean, beautiful, safe, and running smoothly for all of us. From maintaining our streets and parks to handling storms, sanitation, and countless day-to-day tasks most people never even see — they do it all with professionalism and pride.

As we celebrate National Small Business Week, I wanted to take a moment personally to thank the Westfield community for supporting my family’s small business for nearly a quarter of a century.

My name is Josh Wang, and my family and I have proudly owned and operated Manhattan Bagel Westfield for close to 25 years. While many people see a franchise sign, what stands behind that sign is a local family business that has dedicated decades of hard work, long hours, and commitment to serving this community.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of becoming part of so many families’ daily routines and community traditions. We’ve watched kids grow up from coming in after flag football games to eventually working behind our counter as their first job. We’ve supported local schools, PTOs, orchestra programs, sports teams, fundraisers, teacher appreciation events, first responders, and countless community organizations throughout Westfield and the surrounding towns.

Small businesses are the backbone of communities like ours. Every day, local business owners work tirelessly to keep their businesses afloat while balancing rising food costs, labor costs, utilities, taxes, and all the challenges that come with operating independently in today’s world.

Unlike large private equity-backed operations, family-owned businesses are deeply connected to the communities they serve. Our customers are not just transactions — they are our neighbors, friends, teachers, coaches, and local families we’ve gotten to know over decades.

At Manhattan Bagel Westfield, we’ve always tried to go above and beyond by reinvesting back into the community, supporting local causes, employing local residents and students, creating new ideas and menu offerings, and making sure we continue evolving to serve our customers better year after year.
