📚 JUST RELEASED from the Hawthorne’s Backyard Literary Collection:

THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB #12: The Case of “My Dad Said I Could”

It started innocently enough…

Some little guests were stacking, climbing, and treating the Lawn Pong cans like a jungle gym. So, naturally, they were asked to please stop.

The response?

“MY DAD SAID I COULD.”

Never mind that the cans aren’t playground equipment. Never mind the safety issue. Dad said it was okay.

And that’s when Heidi had a thought:

OUR HOUSE. OUR RULES.

So let’s flip the script.

Imagine the entire Hawthorne’s staff showing up at Dad’s house. We start climbing on furniture, knocking things over, rearranging the living room, maybe breaking a few things.

Dad: “HEY! STOP BREAKING MY STUFF!”

Us: “LOU SAID WE COULD.”

Because apparently that’s how this works. Right? 🤷‍♀️

We love our little guests, but safety rules aren’t suggestions—and parental permission doesn’t override the rules of someone else’s establishment.

Will the Lawn Pong cans finally be treated like Lawn Pong cans?

Will Dad still be okay with it when the staff shows up at his house?

And most importantly…

WILL LOU SAY WE CAN?

They say not all heroes wear capes. My personal hero wore big blonde wigs.

WELL… THAT WAS A BLAST. 🍻🔥

A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out to see us at the 2026 West Chicago Food Fest! We had an absolute blast getting out of the Backyard, seeing so many familiar faces, meeting new ones, serving drinks, causing a little trouble, and—most importantly—bartering successfully for food. 😂

You guys showed up, brought the energy, and made it one hell of a day!

We love our West Chicago community and are already looking forward to doing it all again next year.

THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB #11: The Case of the Tiny Tinkler

Just when we thought we had seen it all…

ENTER: THE TINY TINKLER.

This week’s chapter begins with our staff doing what they do best — serving guests, running food, and keeping the Backyard rolling.

Until Eric spotted one of our tiniest guests wandering around on what appeared to be a VERY important mission.

A little wandering.
A little exploring.
A little…“Wait. Is that kid about to—”

Yep.

Pants down. Backyard sprinkler activated. 😂

Eric, doing the responsible thing, approached the nearest table and asked the question every parent hopes they never hear:

“Is he yours?”

The parents’ faces immediately went from happy dinner to ABSOLUTE HORROR. 😂

And honestly… we get it.

When you gotta go, you gotta go. We understand that little bladders don't always operate on a convenient schedule.

BUT… we kindly ask that our youngest guests stay within arm’s reach so Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, or whoever is on toddler duty can make a quick restroom run before nature calls.

Because apparently, if you give a little boy enough space and just the right amount of confidence, he may decide:

“Why use the bathroom when I have an entire Backyard?” 🤦‍♂️😂

No shame. No judgment. Just one tiny bladder, one very surprised staff member, and a story nobody is likely to forget anytime soon. 😂

So parents, we love your little ones. We really do. We just prefer they keep their pants on while enjoying the Backyard. 😂
