When you receive a quote for a custom cake, I know it can sometimes be surprising. So I wanted to share a little bit about what actually goes into that price. 🎂
When you order a custom cake from Delectable Delights, you aren't simply paying for flour, sugar, eggs and butter.
Everything I make is baked from scratch, in small batches, using quality ingredients. The recipes I use didn't appear overnight either—there are countless hours of testing, adjusting and perfecting recipes so that the cake you're serving at your celebration tastes just as good as it looks.
And the work for one custom cake starts long before I turn on the oven.
There is time spent communicating with the customer, planning the design, calculating servings and cake structure, sourcing specialty ingredients and supplies, shopping, preparing fillings and frostings, baking, cooling, leveling, filling, stacking, crumb coating, decorating, making custom details, cleaning, packaging…the list goes on.
Then there are the things you don't necessarily see: cake boards, boxes, parchment, piping bags, decorating supplies, equipment, electricity, licensing, insurance, ingredient waste, practice, recipe development and all of the other expenses that come with running a small licensed bakery.
And anyone who has grocery shopped lately knows that the cost of quality ingredients has become absolutely wild. 😅
Custom decorating itself can take HOURS. Sometimes the decorating takes longer than actually making the cake.
I try very hard to keep my pricing fair because I genuinely love creating something special for someone's birthday, wedding, baby shower or celebration. Making my customers happy is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
But I also think it's important to understand that a custom cake isn't a mass-produced grocery store cake. It's a small-batch, handcrafted product created specifically for one person and one occasion.
And after ingredients, supplies, overhead and all of those hours are accounted for, the actual profit on a custom cake is often much smaller than people might imagine.
So when you choose a small baker for your celebration, you're not just buying a cake.
You're supporting the hours of work, creativity, experience and care that went into creating something especially for you. ❤️
And to everyone who continues to trust me with your celebrations—thank you. I truly appreciate every single order.
