For 15 years, we used USAID grants to fund projects in collaboration with farmer co-ops that improved climate resilience, supported gender equity, engaged youth, and increased crop yields. When the funding was abruptly cut off last spring, we built our own fund at a much smaller (but growing!) scale. Through your contributions, small and large, we’ve raised over $230,000 and counting. These funds are going to a range of projects spanning 7 farmer co-ops in 4 countries across 3 supply chains: coffee, bananas, and sugar. Every year we host a Citizen-Consumer Summit, bringing together stakeholders from all parts of the supply chain. Over three days in June, representatives from Equal Exchange US & UK, La Siembra in Canada, Citizen-Consumers from across the US, and farmer groups, both domestic and from abroad, gathered in one place to talk through the challenges and opportunities of building a more just food system. This year, we were proud to host keynote speaker Santiago Paz Lopez from Norandino, the coffee and cacao farming cooperative he represents in Peru.

The event felt particularly meaningful as it was our 10th summit and coincided with Equal Exchange’s 40th anniversary.

We’ve partnered for many years with both the Small Organic Farmers’ Association (SOFA) in Sri Lanka and the Potong Tea Garden in Darjeeling, India, because we believe in supporting an alternative to the colonial tea model. Instead of trapping their workers in a system of dependency, these collectively-run farmer organizations are paving a stronger, more democratic path forward for their communities.

This is the farmer-led future of tea.
