Sushi fact of the day:

The seaweed wrappers used in makimono (hand rolls) are called nori.

Nori is a type of algae, traditionally cultivated in the harbors of Japan. Originally, algae was scraped from dock pilings, rolled out into thin, edible sheets, and dried in the sun, in a process similar to making rice paper.

Nori by itself is an edible snack and is available with salt or flavored with teriyaki sauce. The flavored variety, however, tends to be of lesser quality and is not suitable for sushi.

Why is ginger served with sushi?

Gari (ginger) is a type of tsukemono (pickled vegetables). It is sweet, thinly sliced young ginger that has been marinated in a solution of sugar and vinegar.

Ginger is usually eaten between dishes of sushi, as it is said to help cleanse the palate. It also prepares the mouth to taste another type of flavor.

Another reason why ginger is served with sushi is that it functions as an antibacterial agent that improves the pattern of digestion, especially when raw food is eaten.

Ever enjoy sake with your sushi?

Sake is a rice-based alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin. It is sometimes spelled saké to show the pronunciation more clearly.

It can be served chilled, at room temperature, or heated, depending on the preference of the drinker, the quality of the sake, and the season.

Sake is usually drunk from small cups called choko, and poured into the choko from ceramic flasks called tokkuri.

Aside from being served straight, sake can be used as a mixer for cocktails, such as tamagozake, saketinis, nogasake, or the sake bomb.
