We made the short trip north to The Real Squeal: Lyons Barbeque & Music Festival this weekend. It has been 5 months since we competed and it was great to see a lot of our BBQ family and get caught up! The were great hosts Friday night with some great pizza and wings by Jason Singletary and Mark Wetherell.

We really had an uneventful cook, which for us is really unusual. We closed 4 lids that we felt stood a good chance against this stacked field.

Springer Mountain Farms chicken 16th
Ribs 29th
Prairie Fresh pork 16th
Brisket 25th
Overall 25th out of 32 teams.

Big Congrats to Hickory Barbecue Company on GC and Cocamoke Smoke BBQ on RGC!

We made a few small changes over the season that haven't worked out for the best. We plan to factory reset and prepare for next season now that our "practice season" begins as hunting season is full swing here in Southeast Georgia and we will be trying to fill some freezers.

We made the trip to Waynesboro, Georgia this weekend to compete in the 2025 Boss Hog Cook-Off. This has become one of our favorite contests each spring.

Tragedy struck Thursday night as we were about to hit the road. One of our team members got a call that one of his children had an accident while helping their grandfather and they were headed to the ER. So he bailed out the truck and headed to meet them. Luckily, the prognosis looks the best it can be at this time.

We competed in the King of the Wing competition and Anything Strawberry on Friday night. We turned in two boxes for wings. One finished 61st and the other apparently went MIA as we didn't receive a score for it.

I struggled to plate our anything strawberry as the heat and moisture in the air just wasn't on my side. Surprisingly though we finished 6th!

Saturday morning we felt good. The cook went smoothly until about 20 minutes until turn in my chicken stalled. Which it never does.... Changes were made and we hit the temp we needed. We managed to close lids on 4 good boxes we felt but judges didn't agree.

29th Springer Mountain Farms Chicken (100%disagree with these scores. Despite the struggle they turned out amazing)
23rd Prairie Fresh Ribs (they were tight)
16th Prairie Fresh Pork (best pork all year, I've struggled here)
22nd Snake River Farms Brisket (too tender)
Overall 22nd out of 42 teams.

Our next scheduled cook will be in October at The Real Squeal: Lyons Barbeque & Music Festival, but we are eyeing a few in between.

HPO BBQ Pit Team and HPO Jr loaded up and made the 6 hour trip north to beautiful Downtown Calhoun for the BBQ and Boogie Festival.

HPO Jr got the weekend started right by taking a Grand Championship in Kids Que. Her 2nd all time.

HPO took to the grills early Saturday morning and we felt good about our chances with a stacked field of some of the world's best pit masters.

When the smoke cleared...

16th place Chicken ( #1 on our table 🤷‍♂️)
13th place Prairie Fresh ribs
22nd pork (felt it was better than two other cooks this year 🤷‍♂️)
13th Snake River Farms Brisket
Overall we ended up 16th out of 32.

Shout out to Mr. Poppa Pig BBQ who is on fire with another GC and congrats to Swig-N-Pig BBQ Team on RGC!

We will scratch our heads and figure out what we need to regroup for a shorter trip to Downtown Waynesboro, Georgia for the Boss Hog Cook-Off May 9-10! This is one event we look forward to every year!

We are set up and rolling smoke here in beautiful Downtown Calhoun for the 2025 BBQ & Boogie Festival!

HPO Jr kicked the weekend off right with a Grand Champion in last night's Kids Que Competition. The rain has cleared out this morning and it's setting up to be a great day for BBQ! GSL to everyone competing this weekend, wherever you are!

Despite the storm that came through as she was cooking and remained at the time for turn in, she managed to close the lid on some pretty amazing burgers tonight en route to her 2nd Kids Que Grand Championship!!

Last year she stumbled here and finished last. She came back more determined than ever this year and it paid off! Huge shout out to Steak Princess BBQ for an amazing Beauty and the Beef Rub that helped make this possible!
