If you have a few minutes I would appreciate you taking the time to read. My name is Kristi & I am Becky’s twin sister & help her run the diner & I wanted to share with you a little info as many have questions concerning the mural. Yes the cost is very high & Becky wanted to be transparent, so that is why she posted the final cost. It has made so many question & not understand what is needed for such an incredible project. Many are not aware how expensive the existing banner on the building was & it only covered a quarter of the building & its just vinyl. That banner was $7,000 & that was 10 years ago. The cost to replace with a new banner in our economy is now almost double that. With the exception of $200 that was donated back in 2016 Becky payed for it all. The cost of the artist painting the mural is barely a cost in the factor of the mural. Im not sure if you have noticed but the building is not a flat surface but corrugated metal. That is not something just any artist can paint on & make the image look good. There is a saying “you get what you pay for” & we’ve learned that the hard way over the years that cheaper isn’t always better. She has made sure to hire the best artist with extensive experience on building such as hers. The first step is to remove the old banner & fix & prepare the building. Next is the cost of supplies & equipment with insurance. They are using the best paint to ensure it last twice as long as the banner & keep in mind the building gets tons of sun beating on it. We want this mural to be something we can all be proud of & frankly that has a higher cost.
Fun fact until this year Becky has also paid to replace any military hero banner that has been needed in Waverly without asking the families to pay or telling them it was needed, she just did it. Unfortunately now it’s no longer possible to do so as so many (82) are in desperate need of updating. This is not a town program, but one that she solely took on 7 years ago bc our town didn’t have a program & she felt we needed to honor our veterans. She is not paid to do any of this but does this as her way to give back & does all this on her little free time while running the diner, being a Mom & daily dialysis treatments. This is why I am hoping you all will help me help her to do the same with this mural.
Not many of you are aware of her medical situation as she tries to keep it a non-issue in her business & in no way ever wants this to be seen as a weakness & given sympathy. 2 years ago my husband donated her a kidney that was not successful & has since then been put on daily dialysis as she awaits another transplant from UNOS, which still has a 3-5 year wait time. This has caused her to strive even harder to make a difference for others. Becky’s goal is to be able to complete this mural project as another one of those missions without leaving our family with the added expense of another loan/bill were she not still here. God willing she is stubborn enough that she will make sure to see the project completed even if she funds the majority of it herself. She always says “I have been so blessed in life there’s nothing I enjoy more than giving back to our community” So I am reaching out to ask for the community’s help in raising some of the funds to help with bringing this project to life for all to enjoy. Thank you so much for those that have already helped donate to this project. Every donation is so greatly appreciated!
