Before anybody had a phone, Friday night in a whole lot of Pennsylvania towns meant a wooden floor, rented skates, and one extremely serious question about the couples skate. 🛸

Almost every borough of any size had a rink, and most of them were the same building underneath. A converted garage, a lodge hall, an old creamery, anything with a big enough floor and a low ceiling. The skates were brown suede with orange wheels and they never quite fit. There was a snack counter with a popcorn machine going all night and a carpeted railing where the kids who could not skate stood for three hours. Somebody's older brother ran the sound and was fully convinced he was a disc jockey.

Most of them are gone now. Self storage, an auto shop, a slab where a building used to be. A handful are still running the same floor under the same mirror ball, usually kept alive by one family who refused to sell it. If you grew up near one, you can still hear exactly what that room sounded like, which is a strange thing for a building to leave behind in people. 🪞
