Join for the 2 Year Anniversary Pop Up shop, live music, and Sunday panel discussion.

2 years ago, the mounting tension caused by gentrification and mass erasure of D.C. culture came to a boiling point at the corner of Georgia and Florida Avenue. A Metro PCS store known for playing and selling GoGo music was silenced after complaints from a neighboring and newly constructed apartment building.

The response, a now-infamous slogan of ā€œDon’t Mute D.C.,ā€ lit up social media timelines across the nation. Long-time activists and musicians banded together to show the world that GoGo was about love, community, and fun by throwing the first-ever Moechella at the intersection of 14th and U Street. The streets swelled as thousands came out to reclaim their city and the joy of its music. The demonstration also spawned a series of protests demanding deeper investments in education, healthcare, and prison reform to benefit existing residents instead of sweeping them aside for new buildings and big business.

This celebration will highlight the Long Live GoGo book (published by .nomu_ ) which chronicles the movement. All images are shot by D.C.-based photographers - a few of which will be featured on our virtual panel discussion Sunday at 1 PM.

Sojourner Truth (born Isabella [Belle] Baumfree; c. 1797 – November 26, 1883) was an American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.
