The Japanese tea ceremony (Chado) is a ritualized practice where matcha is prepared and served. The ceremony is designed to create a sense of peace and respect and to help people appreciate the present moment.

Brushwood Tea is now offering beginner lessons in Chado through the Urasenke branch of tea schools.

Lessons are $30.00 per lesson. This fee covers matcha, sweets, the use of utensils, and help cover the cost of the space.

Please email Jonathan at [email protected] or send us a message to schedule your lesson.

Now selling Shincha and Soba Kukicha.

Shincha, new tea, is a green tea using the first harvest of spring. The early spring leaves are tender and full of nutrients, making it a highly prized and a limited amount of it are available each year. Sophisticated, mild, and sweet with a round and creamy flavor profile. This tea is a rare treat.

Soba Kukicha is roasted buckwheat blended with stem tea. I had this tea in Aomori, Japan in September of 2025, and I wanted to share it with everyone. The roasted, savory flavor of the sobacha adds depth to the light, floral, and nutty notes of the kukicha.

Usucha, thin tea, is a hot, unsweetened, high-quality matcha. In the West, we use the term ceremonial grade, but this term is only a marketing term. What we consider ceremonial matcha is usually usucha or koicha matcha. These matchas are meant to drank hot, unsweetened with a sweet treat as their flavor profiles tend to be complex and nuanced, which would be lost if milk or sugar were to be added. Always remember, use the matcha you purchase for its correct purpose.

Come try a bowl of usucha at Brushwood Tea. Each usucha comes with a small sweet.

Why has Brushwood Tea become important to so many in a short time, and how is Brushwood Tea unique? I will let my patrons answer that.

"It is a serene sanctuary for an authentic, calming tea experience, providing warmth and comfort... watching him explain different tea cultivars feels like being invited to view a precious private collection." - CS

"Jonathan is the best. He took the time to explain everything about the teas. He is so knowledgeable and kind." - ZB

"He always remembers you when you return." - EH

"Brushwood Tea embodies what I think of with the term "third place." The cluster of small tables, the seats at the counter, the tea-lined walls, and the welcoming owner all infuse this small space with life, community, and joy." - AM

Thank you to all my amazing patrons. We could not have made it this far without you.

Our new limited time drink is our Blood Orange Tonic with your choice of sencha or gyrokuro.

Blood orange is a sweeter, complex citrus with notes of raspberry and tart cherry. Which pairs well with the layered sharp, floral, and slightly bitter notes of the tonic water and earthy and umami flavors of the tea. This special has layers of flavor.

As a young child, I visited my aunt in Shomal, an area near the Caspian sea in Northern Iran, where she had many fruit trees in her courtyard. Some of the trees were blood orange trees. I remember going out to the courtyard, grabbing the small ladder, and picking fresh blood oranges to eat. It has been some time since I have been back, but every time I eat a blood orange, I am transported back to that courtyard, picking fresh blood oranges in Iran.

Ichigo Ichie - one time, one meeting

At Brushwood Tea, we believe in embracing the present. Cherishing each action and interaction, recognizing the people and circumstances of our lives are always changing. Simple acts, such as drinking tea, are precious as they will never happen exactly the same again.

Our menu is designed with this in mind. We believe in accentuating the natural flavors of our products instead of
using strong flavor additives that mask the natural flavors.

We encourage you to enjoy each sip and each moment for they are unique, special, and can only be enjoyed for a short time before they are gone.
