Behind the data supporting the sustainable fisheries of Rhode Island is research vessel captain, Pat Brown.

Having spent 15 years as a deckhand on his father’s charter, Pat is no stranger to navigating the marine ecosystems of Rhode Island. While working on deck, Pat’s father encouraged him to get his captain’s license as soon as possible, setting him up for success. After years of apprenticing under his former captain, Pat was promoted to associate captain of Rhode Island DEM’s (.dem) Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) 50-foot research vessel, the John H. Chafee.

Now captain of the Chafee, Pat has years of skill and knowledge of local fisheries on his side, making him an invaluable member of the DMF. In this role, he is responsible for vessel operations and safety, assisting in trawl surveys, and the design and build of marine operations gear. He is focused on ensuring his team has the right tools and technologies to make their data collection safe and accurate, processes streamlined, and reporting fast.

Off-the-clock, you can find Pat fishing and grilling up his favorite RI seafoods (squid or scup) for dinner with family.
