Today, we remember John Mackay, one of the four legendary Silver Kings whose story helped shape the Comstock. ⛏️

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Mackay immigrated to the United States and first worked the California gold fields before arriving in Virginia City shortly after the discovery of the Comstock Lode.

Like many miners of the era, he started with hard work underground, earning $4 a day while exploring mining claims of his own. The profits from those claims allowed him to purchase an interest in the Kentuck Mine, where a significant ore discovery earned him $1.6 million and launched one of the most remarkable success stories in Nevada history.

John Mackay's journey from Irish immigrant to Silver King remains one of the defining stories of Virginia City and the Comstock, reminding us of the ambition, perseverance, and opportunity that shaped this remarkable town.

This is where the rubber meets the road...literally! Experience the heat, smell the rubber and hear the roar as racers compete side-by-side down a 1/16-mile stretch of road.

Racers will compete using full professional equipment, including “Christmas Tree” starting lights, finish-line displays and comparative printouts for each driver.

Think your vehicle is too new for Hot August Nights? The Drag Races are the one event where your vehicle does not have to be 1979 or older! We welcome all makes and models every night, except EVs and vehicles fueled by alcohol or nitrous oxide.
