Some of the wonderful food we ate in Milan in the last couple of days included the most incredible lasagna, a risotto with beet, Gorgonzola, hazelnuts and cherries, a fantastic northern Chinese noodle dish, pinsa (it’s worth looking that one up) and an assortment of free snacks, provided by the nicest barista/barman/sandwich shop operator, in the building where our Airbnb was located. We are on our way back home, but won’t be able to open the store up this Saturday. Many, many thanks to Tilly and Ressa who kept everything running while we were gone. So go see them tomorrow, wish Tilly safe travels, as she’ll be the one going traveling next, and we’ll see you with regular hours next week!

On January 6th, Cypriots exorcise goblins by tossing sweets on their rooftops and chanting. It’s a thing. Honestly! I’ve kept this tradition for the 40 years I’ve lived abroad. Each year I tell myself I’m going to make the sweets, and each year I realize how complicated and messy a process that would be, and I go buy donut holes. Today we went to get the real thing, they are called and Randy approves.

A second post today, as I feel this page has been a bit light on the tea side lately. My friend Paola (see previous post), raises damask roses (the scent is absolutely gorgeous) and elderberry, and harvests both to dry for tea. I get such a comforting feeling seeing simple pleasures like these.

Another trek up the mountains today, with Ianthi and Ken, this time to the beautiful village of Lazanias. Lazanias is a practically pristine, traditional village of 50 or so houses, nestled in the Macheras mountains, that dates from the 1100’s, with what appears to be minimal change. My wonderful high school friend Paola, and her equally wonderful husband Dinos, own a home there that has been lovingly and beautifully restored. They prepared a gorgeous, multi-course meal for us. It was a perfect day.

Today ancient olive trees outside a monastery, a short trip into the mountains where we ate local wild greens cooked with eggs and a fresh trout, cooked on charcoal, by a running brook, under pecan trees and rose bushes. Finally a visit to a church from the 7th century, built in the side of a mountain, in a cave.

Today we went back to the planetarium, this time armed with day passes. Best 18 euro (per person) I ever spent. We literally had the place to our selves. 10 million euro planetarium, just the three of us, for the entire, happy 6 hours we spent there. Plus, it’s one of the most surreal experiences I’ve ever had. The complex compromises of the bishopric for the Tamasos area (Greek orthodox), a Russian Orthodox Church that looks very much like Cinderella’s palace, a Romanian Orthodox Church that looks decidedly like Dracula’s lair in Transylvania, and an ultra-modern planetarium. All of it is surrounded by wheat fields and is in the middle of nowhere. It turns out that the bishop (did you know Cypriot orthodox bishops have to have a university degree?) has a degree in astrophysics, so when he was approached by a Russian oligarch to build a planetarium, he enthusiastically agreed. 10 million euro well spent in my opinion. Apparently we arrived shortly after two schools finished their visit in the am. My sister tells me the place is mobbed on weekends, but, today, we felt like royalty. We could choose what movies to watch, even though they had a posted schedule, we could choose the language of the presentations, we could choose where to go and when, and they even kept the restaurant open late to accommodate us! An excellent time was had by all!

A bigger adventure today. We drove to Kornos, a village known for its terracotta, but, sadly, the pottery we wanted to see was closed. On the upside, we found this wonderful antique shop, which had everything from suits of armor to a fully refurbished carriage, and talked to the nice folks there about tea and herbs suitable for kidney stones. They recommended going to lunch at Lefkara, a beautiful, village at the top of the next mountain. The houses are almost all made of fieldstone and they are famous for silversmithing and lace making. We had a lively lunch but forgot to take pictures of the handicrafts. It’s been a good day.

It was a low-key day today. We had to do some banking today, so the better part of the day was gone. I made a mushroom, leek and spinach risotto for lunch. In the afternoon we took a short drive up the mountains, to the medieval village of Fikardou. About 10 people still live there. We had a candied walnut each and then drove back down the mountain.
