People ask me from time to time what my favorite part of owning North Beach Cafe & Creamery is.
Without hesitation… it’s making the ice cream.
I mean, who doesn’t love ice cream?
There’s something about it that just makes people happy.
Most days you’ll find me in the back of our café making another small batch of ice cream. To get from our walk-in cooler to the creamery, I pass the door that leads into our dining room. There’s a little window in that door, and every now and then I’ll glance through it.
Sometimes I’ll see a little kid sitting at the counter with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.
Ice cream on their face.
Chocolate dripping down their chin.
Maybe a few sprinkles scattered across the counter.
Completely lost in the moment.
For those few minutes, life is perfect.
And I can’t help but smile too.
A few minutes later, I’ll walk out front, where every cone, sundae, banana split, milkshake, float, and ice cream sandwich is made by hand right in front of our customers. One scoop at a time. You can see the excitement build as we add another scoop, another topping, another swirl of whipped cream, and finally that cherry on top.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell who’s more excited—the kids or the adults.
In a world where everyone seems to be rushing somewhere, worrying about something, or staring at a screen, it’s nice to be reminded that happiness can still be as simple as a scoop of ice cream.
That’s why I love making it.
Every batch of our ice cream is made right here in our kitchen, and every cone, sundae, and milkshake is prepared fresh right in front of you. Every order has the chance to become part of someone’s vacation, a family tradition, or simply the best few minutes of their day.
To me, that’s what this business has always been about.
Not just making ice cream.
Making moments.
