Fifty years.
Fifty-two, actually. That's how long it's been since Willis Reed limped out of that tunnel. Since Clyde Frazier ran the show in a way no one had ever seen. Since Earl the Pearl, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, and Dick Barnett brought the championship home to New York.
If you're a real Knicks fan, that history isn't trivia. It's family. It's the photo on your grandfather's wall. It's the story your father told you the first time you ever sat down to watch a game. It's the reason you've spent five decades letting this team break your heart and coming back the next October like nothing happened.
Because we kept coming back.
We came back for Bernard King's beautiful, brutal, knee-shattering 1984 run. We came back when they drafted Patrick — OUR Patrick — and we believed every single year that this would be the one. We came back through Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy. Through Ewing and Starks and Oakley and Anthony Mason and Derek Harper turning the Garden into the loudest, meanest, most beautiful basketball cathedral on Earth.
We came back through Starks's dunk on Jordan. Through Starks going 2-for-18 in Game 7 of the '94 Finals and the way it felt to walk out of MSG that night thinking it had been OURS and we'd let it slip. Through Larry Johnson's four-point play. Through Allan Houston's runner against the Heat. Through the eighth-seed '99 Finals run that ended against the Spurs and somehow still felt like a love letter to the city.
And then.
Then we came back through everything else. Through Isiah. Through Marbury and Eddy Curry. Through Phil Jackson's presidency. Through the Charles Oakley incident. Through the Porzingis trade. Through years where the lottery felt like the only thing left to look forward to.
Through Dolan, Dolan, Dolan.
And in the middle of all of it — for two impossible weeks in February 2012 — there was Jeremy Lin.
Linsanity wasn't just a hot streak. It was the only time in a generation that the Garden felt the way it used to feel. The buzzer-beater against Toronto. The 38 against Kobe. The Friday-night packed-house electricity. For two weeks, every Knicks fan on the planet remembered what this was SUPPOSED to feel like. And then it was gone, and we kept coming back anyway.
So when we tell you that Jeremy Lin is going to be at Madison Square Garden for Games 3 and 4 of these Finals — the brightest spot of those wilderness years coming home to watch this team finish what generations couldn't — we hope you understand what that means. That's the city's heart walking back through the door.
And this team. THIS team. Brunson playing every possession like he grew up watching tape of Walt Frazier. Thibs grinding the way only Thibs can. Knicks fans flooding every arena on the road like an away game doesn't exist. Two wins into the Finals. TWO. Two wins away from the first banner in fifty-two years.
Will we forgive Dolan?
Honestly?
If they actually pull this off — if a banner goes up at the Garden this June — we'll think about it at the parade. Right now, that's the most we can give him. And it's more than we ever thought we'd give him.
But the truth is, this isn't about Dolan. It never was.
This is about every Knicks fan who kept showing up. Every kid who got a Ewing jersey for Christmas and slept in it. Every father who explained the 1970 team to a son who'd never seen them play. Every grandmother who can still name the starting five of the '73 champions. Every taxi driver in this city who has a take. Every transplant who learned what MSG sounds like in the third quarter of a playoff game. Every one of us who never gave up on this team even when the team gave us every reason to.
We made this cookie cake for you.
Orange and blue, sprinkles and all, GO NY GO NY GO piped down the middle the way it's been chanted for half a century. Whether you're hosting a watch party, sending one to your dad who's been waiting since '73, surprising your group chat, or just feeding yourself and your nerves for four hours of basketball — we want to bake it for you.
This is the moment. The one we've been waiting for our whole lives.
Let's eat cookie cake. Let's cheer until we're hoarse. Let's watch our team finally come home.
DM us with your email and we'll get your order in. Games 3 and 4 are right around the corner.
