There's a particular feeling at the end of September in Vail.

The aspens have peaked. The mornings are colder. The light has shifted to something thinner and more angled, and there's a quiet in the valley that feels like a held breath. The space between one season and the next.

We love this moment. It's when the hotel feels most like itself: warm inside, the mountains just beyond the window, the creek still running below.

Fall isn't over. But something is shifting. And for those who know what comes next in Vail... well, you know.

We'll see you soon ❄️

September mornings at Ludwig's Breakfast have a particular quality.

The light through the glass ceiling catches differently when the aspens outside are turning. The buffet is at full spread. The room hums with the quiet energy of people about to have a very good day in the mountains.

Open Monday through Saturday, 7–11am. Sunday, 7am–12pm.

Whatever the day holds: a hike through peak-color trails, a round at the Club, a long spa morning ... it starts better here.

The farmers' market runs through early October, and in September it's at its best.

The local produce is peak autumn: squash, apples, late-season greens. The wildflowers have given way to dried arrangements and warm-toned stems. The village is quiet enough to leisurely browse.

Vail in September is the town at its most livable. No lift lines. No summer rush. Just the farmers' market on a Sunday morning, the gondola for a hike, lunch on a patio and an afternoon that takes its time.

Sonnenalp sits at the center of all of it.
Right on Gore Creek.
Right in the village.

We can't wait to see you.

Of all the things that make this hotel singular, this might be the one guests mention most when they come back.

Sonnenalp is the only hotel in Vail Village on Gore Creek.

In summer, the water is cold and blue. In September, something changes. The aspens drop gold leaves into the current. The light is lower and warmer. The sound of the water carries differently... quieter, somehow.

From the creekside suites, from the spa, from the outdoor pool and the patio, the water is always there. Always present. It becomes part of the stay in a way that guests find difficult to explain and impossible to forget.

We understand. We feel the same way.

One of our favorite events of the year, Gather in the Garden, returns for one final night on September 25th.

An evening of food, w**e, music and the particular kind of warmth that only happens when the right people are in the right place at the right time.

The garden will be lit. The food will be beautiful. And the backdrop, Vail in early fall, will be exactly right.

If you've been before, you know to arrive hungry and plan to stay late. If this is your first time: welcome. We think you'll want to come back.

September is when the spa becomes something else entirely.

When the air outside has that particular fall chill, cool enough to want the steam, warm enough to still call it beautiful, the Sonnenalp Spa becomes something genuinely extraordinary.

A morning on the trail. An afternoon here. Dinner at the Chalet with the fire going.

That's September at Sonnenalp. We think you'll find it's worth the trip.

Some of the people on our team have been here longer than some of our guests have been alive.

That's not a coincidence. It's a reflection of something true about this place - that Sonnenalp is not simply a hotel to work at. It is, for many of our team, a home. A community. A place where the guests who come back year after year become familiar faces, and where the work of hospitality feels less like a job description and more like a way of being.

We are endlessly grateful for the people who make this place what it is. They are, in every sense, the heart of Sonnenalp.

Oktoberfest has come to Vail and it feels right at home here!

Lionshead Village hosts its Oktoberfest celebration (September 11–13), with live music, traditional food, and the particular brand of late-summer energy that Vail does so well.

Vail Village Oktoberfest follows September 18–20. 🍺

For a hotel with German roots, there's something deeply fitting about celebrating this tradition in the valley. At Sonnenalp, Gemütlichkeit isn't a theme, it's a way of operating. It's what we've been practicing since a small German inn first opened its doors more than a hundred years ago.

Stop by and when you're ready to come in from the festivities, we'll have a warm place waiting.

Every year, September does something remarkable in Vail.

The aspens turn. Not all at once. It happens gradually, hillside by hillside, until the entire Gore Range is gold and amber and the light in the valley has a particular warmth that's impossible to describe and impossible to forget once you've seen it.

This is peak foliage season in one of Colorado's most breathtaking corridors. The hiking trails are quieter than summer. The days are crisp and sunny. The evenings are cool enough for a fire and a glass of something warm.

At Sonnenalp, fall has always been one of our favorite chapters. The hotel is warm and unhurried, the restaurants are at their best and the spa feels exactly right after a morning on the trails.

If you've been thinking about a fall visit, this is your sign.

August has a rhythm all its own here with longer days, full patios, one more hike squeezed in before golden hour...

And there's a lot to look forward to once September arrives: the aspens just starting to turn gold, quieter trails, and one of our favorite stretches of the year in Vail.

We can't wait to share it with you!
