When we find another one as old or older than us, we love to acknowledge and celebrate that.

Congratulations to Neal’s on 100 years!

We got to catch up with my high school buddy Cameron this last night. He and his family stopped in the restaurant Thursday when we weren’t there, so we shuffled some stuff around so we could break bread together and catch up Saturday night in San Antonio before they went back home out of state where they live.

While our life trajectories are very different,
one thing that hasn’t changed is our friendship. 36 years and counting since we graduated. How time flies.

It was such a joy to visit with Cameron and to see how much progress he and his family and children have made with their lives. Last time we were all together was at the restaurant 4+ years ago.

Speaking of restaurants, we had a great meal with good service in a nice clean space. Those things really add to the experience of catching up, so a thank you to Pappadeaux for being that.

My experience there last night, is a reminder for us to continue being that type of place for others catching up with those they care about at our restaurant. We’ve been that place and space since 1935 and with your continued support, we will be here many more years.

We look forward to being part of your plans. Let us help make it memorable.

Lori and I and the rest of the team will be back at it tomorrow, beginning at 11.

See you soon. See you at The Vasquez!

Well God, in typical God fashion, put all the pieces together to make the emergency drain line repair as minimally invasive as possible.

I got the call from the plumber at 10:58 this morning to say “All done. You can run the water now.”

Thanks God. I appreciate you.

And here is how we got to this point.

Sunday night after my wife and I had been working inside the restaurant and outside the restaurant, doing maintenance and improvements, I checked the clean out which is a normal maintenance kind of thing. To my surprise, it had non-moving liquid in it. I told my wife, we’ll need to stay in Uvalde so we can rent the plumbing snake from Reno’s Monday morning when they open. No pushback, just acceptance. Love that about her.

I got up a bit earlier than normal so I could add the task of the rental into my day. I went and picked up the plumbing machine cable drum and was unloading it at the restaurant a few minutes after 8am.

Shockingly, we couldn’t clear the drain line after several attempts.

After running the snake several times at a distance greater than the drain line, we came to the realization, “Houston, we have a problem.”

Panicking made no sense, so good ole logic prevailed.

First course of action was to contact the City of Uvalde to see if the sewer line was bogged down on their side. From the person who took our call, to the 2 men who came to do the work, they were amazing.

They guys came out quickly and were incredibly thorough and diligent. They did everything they could and it was very appreciated too. If anyone knows the name of the 2 men, please let us know. We want to feed them on our watch.

So, after we confirmed the city side of the sewer line was good, the next course of action was to bring in a professional with the experience and the equipment to “get ‘er done.”

The service was prompt and the price was fair and just like that, the problem was solved.

Now, here is where it gets interesting.
Late Sunday night, I posted about God’s plan and how His version of our life is always bettter than anything we come up with. I called the devil out for being the devil and his devilish predictable ways. And then a situation arrived (conveniently a bigger problem then it should have been) that was supposed to stress us out and worry us and cause us to fight and cause us to fold, but we didn’t, cause we have God.

I would be quite the hypocrite if I said one thing and then did something else and that’s not a good way to live, so, we trusted God to put things together and He did.

Regardless of whatever you are going through, praise God. Always! Trust and be patient. Things work out when YOU choose to keep your faith, so keep it.

And with that being said. We’re open. Come see us. The chipotle chicken enchiladas are amazing,

Here till 9.
See you soon. See you at The Vasquez !

I remember how hard it was for Lori and I to get the restaurant back open. It took us over 16 months of work until we were able to open back up for our first day of business on February 23rd, 2020. I remember how before we had a chance to really dig in, Covid rained on our parade. We didn't have much of a chance to ramp up before we had to close our dining room on March 19th. It was quite dejecting. But, we prayed for strength and God gave us a situation where our only choice was to be strong. We pushed forward as best we could, but boy oh boy was it a long grueling road.

As the months went by, we began to slowly grow, eventually the dining room restrictions were lifted. I truly felt that we had been closed for so long and we had not had much time before Covid clipped us, that it was seeming as if we were cursed or doomed at times. When I would feel that way, my loving wife would encourage me and remind me that together, we could do anything and that God's plan for our lives was going to be worth it.

Prior to opening, we had our street sign taken down in 2019 due to the poor condition of the wood (severe rot) and also because it had become a safety hazard as well. It had been clipped to many times by 18 wheelers jumping the curb and had developed a lean.

As we got closer to the end of 2020, Lori and I began to speak about getting a sign. We had a mock up of a very basic one delivered on December 8, 2020. Nothing fancy, no lights, no marquee, just a very simple basic sign. For me, I felt getting a sign was going to prove that we were going to make it. It would make me feel that we were moving forward. Despite what I wanted right then and there, the mock up came and went. Time went by, years went by and at times, it seemed as if we would never be able to get one.

Despite our disappointment in what we wanted, we stayed faithful We did not curse. We did not get mad at God. We did not get mad at each other. Instead, we worked. Hard. We sacrificed and we thanked God. We had challenges and we thanked God. We cared for one another and we thanked God. We sacrificed for our staff and we thanked God. We did our best for our guests and we thanked God.

And then it happened, the plan was revealed. God, in usual God fashion showed up.

Cue up August 2025. We ended up being recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as 1 of 50 historically significant restaurants in the country. And in addition to that honor, it came with a monetary award. Money we could use for, yup, a sign. And not just the sign we had first had designed, but one that would honor our past while carrying us into the future.

The take away is this. Things don't always work out according to your timetable, but that's ok. God makes it to when it does work out, when He says it is your time, it is always better than what your version of it was going to be.

For those going through any self doubt or questioning where God is, trust me, He is there, always working for the big reveal in your life. Until then, live a life of gratitude and keep your faith.

Black Angus Beef Fajitas are a favorite of mine.

First we trim the skirt steak in house. Then we take a half pound of those fajitas and cook them after you order them. To that, we add a serving of Q’s charro beans, Tia Esther’s Spanish Rice, Pico de gallo, grilled onions, guacamole and flour tortillas (or corn).

A meal and a satisfying one.

Available everyday we are open which translates into Mon-Sat, 11am-9pm.
