Topline Saddle Fitting America My name is Billie-Jo Stinson and I operate Topline Saddle Fitting, originally in Australia for approximately 7 years and for the last 5 years, here in America.

Topline Saddle Fitting America LLC is a fully accredited mobile saddle fitting service, catering to Arizona, its riders and its horses in all disciplines and at all levels. I am accredited through various bodies ie the NSW Agricultural College as well as private brands ie Stubben Australia and others. Prior to my saddle fitting, I was employed within the saddle and equine industry for approximately 20 years. Fitting saddles and improving horse and rider performance has been my passion for the last 10 years and am constantly broadening my skill set and education base. We can never learn too much!

Saddle fitting is about more than throwing some saddles on and checking the ‘finger height’ at the pommel.

Over the years I’ve seen many shapes, sizes, actions, sensitivities and have had the privilege of working in with some of the best vets, farriers and body specialists available.

So when my professionalism dropped as this boy was led out and I whispered “Ho… lee… cow…” I caught myself.

I turned to his owner who is a wonderful Arizonan vet and said “I’ve never seen one this big in my entire life!”

They said “Me neither.”

He will remain anonymous so as not to be ogled at out in public, but this boy is an extremely accomplished jump horse. Very strong and sound in every other aspect but with a back that wants to pretend he’s a turtle.

He has a lot of interesting features in his back and whilst having a roach back is desirable to many jump riders, it is imperative that we keep him completely free and able to flex that spine beyond the norm. But we also need to lay a saddle and ensure it doesn’t bounce away from the contour.

This is where we see it all combined - biomechanics, saddle style, design WITHIN the saddle, and an understanding of what is required of this boy in his work.

How do we support and complement him whilst ensuring we aren’t creating a Frankenstein saddle combination or blocking his movement and potential development?

To this end, we changed saddle styles and pad arrangements, reaffirmed positioning and we were off to the races, as they say! It’s a work in progress. We will be testing out the combination over the coming days before we can say he’s 100% ready.

We would have the exact same challenges in an endurance saddle or a western saddle.

He’s such a sweet little guy. He livened up my week and really left me with a happy challenge of my experience and skill set.

Thank you, big guy!

I recently was with my family overseas and it was so fantastic. Leaving is always hard and I usually throw myself in to work and just count the days til next year’s trip!

Today, I visited with a kindred spirit.

Last time Lola and I had a saddle fit, we spent a lot of time discussing appropriate behaviour between the air-gnashing of teeth and glaring of eyes.

Good times.

Today, I said hi to Lola, dodged the predictable teeth chomp toward my chest and got to talking with her Mum, Tara and barn owner, Kristen. We didn’t need to fit Lola anyway.

But Lola wasn’t on board for that rubbish so she did what we all wished for, and took an impromptu nap. My favourite part of this was the way her Mum eventually gave up and joined her.

I hear ya, Lola. One hoof in front of the other, matey. We’ll get there!

*Thank you to all. She has secured a safe landing for her horse and herself for tonight!*

An emergency call:

A beautiful client of mine is in Cave Creek with an emergency hospitalization. She has her second horse on board.

Does anyone have a place in the immediate Cave Creek area where she can safely stall her horse and camp out in her trailer for the night?

Really sweet girl, respectful and courteous.

Any help?

I have had a lot of Fresians this week- someone must have opened the gate and let them all out 😉🤣

Among them was Martien and his Mum, Debbie and their western equipment.

Debbie has had Martien almost his whole life and he is now in his 20s and looking as magnificent as ever.

We will be showing Martien’s back in an upcoming post about certain conformations and how we need to approach them all independently to ensure a long and happy riding career.

This is where I love to lean into my breed and development forecasting qualifications as each breed, each type, each style of work and of horse is so unique, needing this level of care and foresight.

These 2 were an absolute joy and we have got Martien in a wonderful set up. May he canter gracefully along with you for many more years, Debbie!

Thank you for trusting me to help keep you happy and safe!

Over at John Volken Academy in Gilbert this week and spent some time with Maddy and her beautiful little girl, Iris.

Iris is a 7 year old flashy Arab mare and is such a good girl. She was quiet and still the entire session as we measured her up for a new western saddle. We need to find something to fit her Arab back, comfortable for Maddy, within budget and suitable for a wide range of western showing work. Plus we need it to ‘look the goods’ for the show ring as well.

Once we were done, she finally let me know how she felt about the entire process!

Thank you so much, Maddy. You really do have a special little girl in Iris!

TRAINER TUESDAY!!

Here’s our little moment to give thanks for the patient, knowledgeable, kind, patient, tireless and most importantly patient trainers in our lives!

Actual trainers, friends, barn mates, fellow competitors or parents - who guides us? Gives advice and encouragement and helps us to be better horse people and riders? Post them here and tell us why they’re fantastic!

Here is my Daisy-Mae and her coach, Lisa Somers. Lisa is over at Winter Rose in Cave Creek. Daze has had a great time just getting to know horses but has decided she is going to be a world champion professional ‘trotter’ and probably a professional ‘galloper’ when she grows up and Lisa is helping her achieve these specific goals 🤣

Look at this woman go. Rain, hail or shine, here she is, not only trotting in front of Bear but SINGING as she goes.

If it were me, I’d jog 3 steps, trip over, swear a few times before throwing it to heck and storming off.

Thank you, Lisa! I don’t care what Daze does, or how well she does it so long as she is always having this much fun. She wouldn’t be half way to being a professional world champion trotter without you!

Trainer Tuesday is a few hours away!

You’ve never heard of it, you say? Well, yeah, probably because I just made it up.

We couldn’t do what we do without the support or guidance from others. Be they trainers, friends, fellow competitors, barn owners or maybe just bossy parents trying their best to get you to the world championships 😉🤣

So, just for fun, let’s spend a day celebrating the wonderful ‘trainers’ in our lives with Trainer Tuesday!

I’ll be posting a video tomorrow morning and I want you guys to post pictures or videos of your training counterparts in the comments. Let’s give them all a huge high five… from down low. On the ground because we fell off.
