Its our wine of the week! Followers of our posts will know what devoted fans of the Loire Valley we are. There may be no other region more perfect for exploring what differences in terroir can do to a specific varietal’s flavors. Sancerre famously has 3 soil types: limestone, clay and silex. The debate about what these actually add up to for the fruit is endless. A scientist might tell you that there isn’t any way that the minerality of the silex soil can result in flinty notes in the wine, and yet. . . there they are. We confess to an agnosticism on many of these questions. Part of what’s so captivating about wine is its ineffable mystery, and its moving target resistance to being pinned to a board and definitively analyzed.
The Cherrier brothers have been making wine in Sancerre since the 1980’s as their family has been doing since the 19th century. About 15 years ago, with growing families and every member working in wine, they expanded their holdings into Menetou-Salon, the western neighbor of Sancerre. The soil there is predominately Kimmeridgian marl, which the winemakers say lends a freshness to the Sauvignon Blanc. The Cherrier’s practice ecologically minded viticulture, using no fertilizer, lots of cover crops, and additionally are moving back to draft animals instead of tractors. This is another example of an extremely high quality bottle, that would be substantially more expensive if it had the word “Sancerre” on the label. As the hot weather lands, we promise that a cold glass of this beautiful white under a bit of shade will calm and cool you down. Enjoy it on premise for $45.- or 40% off to-go!
